THE FIFER Posted June 16, 2019 Report Posted June 16, 2019 The Joe Murphy Column Saturday the 1 st June saw us hold our first race of the new season with the ScottishNational Flying Club with 464 members sending 3876 birds to Buckingham;broken down into the following sections; Section A 579 birds; Section B 604 birds;Section C 817 birds; Section D 312 birds; Section E 1024 birds; Section F 379birds & Section G 161birds. There was a shock to the membership with the newson the web pages stating ‘We have just learned that the Lib-Line facility is nolonger available for reporting arrivals however if you wish to record the arrival ofyour first bird please e-mail details to the secretary’. During the day I had anumber of fanciers telling me that the BHW had stopped this service. On makingenquires I was informed that in the Editorial of the 19 th April issue of the BHW itstated that: ‘Aquarius Communications have notified us, that due to technicaldifficulties, they will no longer be able to provide Lib-Line services. They havebeen in contact with organisations affected and any 2018 rebates have beentransferred into organisations’ bank accounts.’ Yet members, on the 1 st of Junefound this out for the very day of their first race. We have up to date technologynowadays were you can send a picture or messages to anyone in the WORLD inseconds. I will agree that not EVERYONE has an IPhone that can send emailsdirect to the secretary. Plus who has the time to go into the house to send an email, when they have a national race on going. The point of racing pigeons in thenational is to compete against the best fanciers and birds in the country. So to goaway from your loft to find out if any birds are reported home and miss your birdarrive home is suicidal and no one will ever do this. I know that I and many of myfriends would never do this as we want to watch out for our birds returning home.Margaret and I travel all the way up to Arbroath to watch for Kevin’s pigeonscoming home from a national not for watching club racing. As a matter of interestKevin timed 3 birds within a minute to win 129 th 131 st & 132 nd open so he was wellpleased but his 5 th pigeon is the one whose arrival will live with me. We werewatching the sky and there was nothing going about when up in the heavens Inoticed something, it was a bird closing its wings and dropping like a exist-missilelanded on the aviary roof and ran into the trap. It was Kevin’s good hen that hasbeen racing well all year; I will never forget the sight of her dropping down ontothe loft. It’s a sights like this that we keep racing pigeons. Charlie & Glen Cameronhad the 1 st x 3 birds in the club from the national winning 31 st 67 th & 102 nd openwell done lads. You will also read in John Baillie’s Traprain race report that therewere a lot of losses with birds being reported in North Wales and Ireland. One ladin the west section had 2 birds home from an entry of 20 birds, others had 1 out of10 and some top fanciers did not have a bird home. I have also heard that some topquality pigeons are missing I will not mention their names as their owners aregoing through a bad time at the moment as none of us like losing our best birds. The winner of the Buckingham race winning 1 st section A 1 st open is David T Owenof Coldingham who previously won 1 st SNFC from Eastbourne in 2009 we send 2 our congratulations to David on winning this Buckingham race. 2 nd & 3 rd section B2 nd & 5 th open is my dear friend Billy Bilsland of Ayton. The Peterhead club had agreat race with 4 birds winning taking the top section G awards and were all inthe top 10 open from an entry of 3876 birds. Jim & Ann Donaldson are 3 rd section 8 th open with Gordon Willox 4 th section9 th open both fly 382 miles. Unfortunately I was not able to get anything on the 3 rd federationwinners this week. Ayrshire Federation 5 th race of the season was due to be flownfrom Retford on the 26 th May but due to the ever changing forecast for the worst, the race controller late on the Friday night (when he should have been enjoying awedding reception) was making arrangements to have the birds go to Wetherbyinstead, approx. 43 miles shorter on the hope to get an early liberation and beat theweather front coming in from the west. The federation has been very unfortunatethis year between breakdowns and poor weather, we are out at our 6 th race and wehave not reached the 200 miles mark. Not great preparation for the lads who arelooking to enter their birds into the following week’s race with the SNFC fromBuckingham, which is a jump of over 100 miles. Thank you once again forpublicising our results Joe yours in sport Alan Curran, secretary. Joe’s Joke As a young man, Tom was an exceptional golfer. At the age of 26, however hedecided to become a priest, and joined a rather peculiar order. He took theusual vows of poverty and chastity, but his order also required that he quitgold and never play again. This was particularly difficult for Tom, but heagreed and was finally ordained a priest. One Sunday morning, the reverendFather Tom woke up and realizing it was an exceptional beautiful and sunnyearly spring day, decided he just had to play golf. So… he told the AssociatePastor that he was feeling sick and convinced him to say Mass for him thatday. As soon as the Associate Pastor left the room. Father Tom headed out oftown to a golf course about 40 miles away. This way he knew he wouldn’taccidentally meet anyone he knew from his parish. Setting up on the first tee,he was alone, after all is was Sunday morning and everyone else would be atchurch! At about this time, Saint Peter leaned over to the Lord while lookingdown from the heavens and exclaimed. ‘You’re not going to let him get awaywith this are you?’ The Lord sighed, and said, ‘No I guess not’. Just thenFather Tom hit his ball and it shot straight towards the pin, dropping justshort of it, rolled up and fell into the hole. IT WAS A 420 YARD HOLE INONE!!! Saint Peter was astonished; He looked at the Lord and asked, ‘Whydid you let him do that?’ The Lord smiled and replied, ‘Who is he going totell?’ Please continue to keep the news flowing; to Joe Murphy Mystical Rose Cottage2 Flutorum Avenue Thornton by Kirkcaldy KY1 4BD or phone 01592 770331 orEmail to joejmurphy1@gmail.com REMEMBER THE J IN THE
