invalidusername Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 sorry to hijack, but on the subject of S Wales fanciers, does anyone know about any old members of clubs around the central/m4 Newport area? I'm talking 1970s now!

paul10121968 Posted July 29, 2008 Author Report Posted July 29, 2008 hi there was an article in the south wales argus (weds 23 july) about pill racing club.they have received a lottery grant to install the new "electronically tagged system" to make the sport easier for disabled fanciers.to lifelong members names are quoted-tom fleming and glyn picton.dont know them personally but they were there around that time.
pjc Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 Paul, we are also in South Wales, not far from Ant. I wouldn't bother with Louella and look around your area for something to get started with. Again you are welcome to a pair of youngsters next year. Phil

invalidusername Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 Thanks. My dad (no longer with us) knew someone called Ossie(?) Reynolds. He used to have a window cleaning round and might have lived off Corporation Road, Newport. I could be wrong as I was young at the time. My dad used to bring a whicker basket of pigeons home and it was a real treat for me to throw them in the air to go home. Must have been about 30 or more years ago. If anyone knew Ossie (might be wrong spelling) would love to hear about him.
paul10121968 Posted July 29, 2008 Author Report Posted July 29, 2008 hi chris.the article says that it will allow its elderly members to compete on a level playing field.dont know much about the club yet.but it is on my list of clubs to approach for membership.
ChrisMaidment08 Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 if i was you i would apply to a decent club were you will have a laugh with decent peaple not out to rip you off
pjc Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 Nownow David you kep that quiet! Paul, you may find that joining any club that has already got ETS may put you at a dissadvantage unless you buy your own. The grant will have been applied for to supply current membership with equiptment and as grant limit is £5000 unlikely to have purchased spare equiptment. Phil
ChrisMaidment08 Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 correct phil and you would have a job borrowing one the oddfellows is an excelent club with great members
invalidusername Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 Yes Phil, I did keep it quiet. But always remembered the thrill of taking those smooth birds out of that basket and throwing them into the air. Was always amazed that they were going to fly all the way back home. I guess I've never really lost that. Strange but true ;-)
paul10121968 Posted July 29, 2008 Author Report Posted July 29, 2008 i prefer "cock and thimble"system.thats the way i know and prefer.so i will be joining a club that flys that way.but i am in the process of finding which clubs are available to me,because i know boundries are involved.
paul10121968 Posted July 29, 2008 Author Report Posted July 29, 2008 sorry should be "CLOCK and thimble"
paul10121968 Posted July 29, 2008 Author Report Posted July 29, 2008 my first memory of pigeons was wheeling them down to the club on a pushchair with my father.he would have sometimes three baskets all on top of each other by the time he got there.
ChrisMaidment08 Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 tell you what phil its one of the few clubs i enjoyed judgeing shows and spending time with its members
pjc Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 A lot of that has been lost now with small clubs, the banter on a friday and sat night, club shows etc through the winter all used to be part of the enjoyment, now if you win to much you become an outcast!
