  1. Thanks again for all the offers of birds but it will be a while before I either decide and get the hutch ready; I also want Jake to get more involved so I wont need to do everything! Valance Lofts, not sure why the mails have bounced back, I've had mails from other sources today as well as here first thing!!!!
  2. Many thanks to all of you for your help and offers. We do have 2 hutches at present and one is empty but needs repair, so that might be a good option to start with. In the last 3 years, my son has flitted from football to cycling, golf, skateboarding and scooters; not to mention the ps2, Wii etc. and especially as the dreaded 'credit crunch' is begining to bite and we are having to tighten the purse strings, he just keeps on wanting all the time!!! I know their only young once but he has NO idea about the vale of money and will not take responsibilities for his own actions..................a typical 'teen' I guess. I am having one forum problem though, since this morning, I'm not receiving and notifications so if my responses are a little delayed please don't think I'm ignoring anyone. Thanks for the links etc. I'll be taking a look this evening.
  3. referring back to my other thread, Valance Loft said he sent me a pm!!! there is nothing in my box and for some reason there is not a reply box either!!! might be my settings.
  4. Thank you for you welcome and help. I am still trying to get my head around the different types of pigeon available and for what purposes!! It will take a while before any decision is made so I will be able to have a good look around the threads, ask daft and stupid questions and trawl the net!!. thanks again.
  5. Thank you but we have hedges surrounding our gardens so a hutch type thing would need to be mounted on the house. could both be used in conjuction with each other?

  7. That's the point of asking!!!!! are they suitable for them? as for your last comment to someone that is trying to find out information on a subject unknown to him, I think I'll try the library :-/
  8. As a total newbie and someone that isn't particularly interested in keeping pigeons, my son has got it in his head that he wants some fantail pigeons!!!! The wife and I are not really wanting him to persue this as our garden isn't that big and I know that he'll probably, like most fads he has, lose interest within 6-8 months time ??) We certainly are not going to erect a big loft type thing but I don't mind opting for a dovecote!!!! I've seen a few online and could make one with my boys help to get him involved from the start, quite easily............................... http://www.deanbirders.co.uk/Building_The_Dovecote.htm how many birds could safely be kept in something like this and how safe would they be from things like cats and foxes? Thanks in advance.
  9. thanks for the replies; basically I just Googled pigeon basics, beginners and this was one of the listings. Is birdtrader another forum? not checked it out yet! Been looking around and the majority seem to have these big shed type of lofts; a lot more than I was expecting. I've seen some like big bird tables but house shaped :B on a stake type thing. I'm only looking at a max of about 5 birds IF I decide to go the distance. I'm in Darlo..................opposite the park and football ground.
  10. Hi all, my 12 year old son has been giving me loads of greif to get some fantails! I have never kept birds so am unsure what it involves!!! Any info would be of help; personally I would rather not get any as I expect, I'd be the one to clean out the 'loft' and feed them etc. thanks in advance, PaulA
