not a good idea tammy unless its a springer at a dead bird , better to shoot them of the top of the bird it strikes , sparrowhawks will come down throw a batch of birds , the birds are to quick for them, i never seen them get lucky yet , another way to get them is to watch the male carrying to the nest , what you do about that is up to you

Jas ,you got my sympathy, you are going to have to get tooled up , its 3 years since i lost a bird to a sparrowhawk, it was a young bird first time out was taken over a hayfield, i did all the correct things, unfortunately a buzzard took the bird before the sparrowhak came back,
i have a cat box set all the time , my airgun has a pellet up the spout, and two springertraps in the shed , i also have another backup , but cant say what it is for obvious reasons .
i hope you get the culprit jas.

i was talking to my m8 yesterday at my front gate , we heard a fluttering commotion in a large fir tree in a back garden a few yards away .
two birds fell out the tree and landed a few yards away, the larger firmly attached to the smaller , the larger was dispatched to birdie heaven , while the smaller a collared dove was in a sad state and in shock, to our amazement it flew up to a house roof with great determination .
the collared dove sat for hours then was gone bye eveningi hope the poor little bird survives ,

pompey micks question on the best time to train his birds from work has been on my mind a lot , thinking back over the years of all the strikes by peregrines and sparrowhawks, it occurred to me that i never got a single strike when it was raining, i wonder if any body has noticed this , or is it peculuar to me ..
rain doesnt put me of for training , if the birds can fly around the loft for an hour and a half in rain they can train in it

SATURATION POINT
IS THERE A SATURATION POINT , WHEN IT IS REACHED WHAT IS THE GAME PLAN , THE PLAIN FACT IS THERE IS NO GAME PLAN , THIS IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE R.SP.B..
RAPTORS WILL BE CONTROLLED BE THE AVAILABILITY OF THEIR PREY , IN OTHER WORDS THE WILD BIRD POPULATIONS ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO BE DECIMATED AND OUR BIRDS ARE GOING TO HARRASED EVEN MORE WHEN FLYING OUT, RACING, AND TRAINING,
I AM TOTALY CONVINCED THAT RACES ARE BEING DISRUPTED BY PEREGRINES ,IT WOULD BE FOOLISH OF US TO THINK OTHERWISE,I PERSONALY HAVE HAVE BIRDS HOME WITH DAMAGE FROM A PEREGRINE STRIKE , IF THEY ATTACK OUR BIRDS IN TRAINING YOU CAN SAFELY ASSUMETHE SAME IS HAPPENING IN RACES .
THEE WEEKS AGO I WAS GIVING MY JULY BIRDSA RUN FROM 20MILES ,THE BIRDS WERE LET OUT AND IMMEDIATLE STARTED THE QUICK ZIG ZAG MOTION THAT THEY DO WHEN A PEREGRINE IS THREATENING THEM , I NEVER SAW THE PEREGRINEAS IT WAS A BRIGHT SUNNY MORNING , THE BIRDS WERE ARRIVING ALL DAY AND THE NEXT MORNING ONE OF THEM A HEN HAD PRIMARY AND SECONDARYFLIGHTS MISSING NO OTHER DAMAGE , A NEAR MISS I THINK , THERES STILL 2 TO COME HOME THAT WAS THEIE FIFTH TRAININGRUN THE 3RD FROM THAT POINT .
THE MAJORITY OF THE RINGS I FIND AT THENEST SITE NEAREST TO ME ARE N.W. FEDERATION BIRDS , THEY FLY THROUGH THIS AREA WHEN THERE THERE IS WEST IN THE WIND
NORTH OF THE FORTH IN FIFE THERE ARE A PAIR ON LONGANNET POWER STATION CHIMMEY A SINGLE BIRD ON THE FORTH RAIL BRIDGE A PAIR AT INVERKEITHING QUARRY , A PAIR AT THE GOAT QUARRY NR CROSSGATES A PAIR AT ORROCK QUARRYNR THE PETRO CHEMICAL PLANT , A PAIR IN THE PETRO CHEMICAL PLANT, A PAIR IN REDCRAIGS TOLL QUARRY , A PAIR IN THE HILLS AT LOCH GLOW A PAIR IN NIVINSTONE CRAGS NR CLEISH ALL WITHIN TEN MILES OF OF MY LOFT , AND THE IRONIC PART IS THE RSPB ARE SAYING THEY ARE STILL RARE , WHEN THE ARE NOT WHO IS TRYING TO TAKE THE MICKEY AND HOODWINK THE PUBLIC . the damage to that bird was not done in a few minutes ,more like half an hour a springer trap would have got the culprit , your going to be targeted again shortly , thats for sure , you have to be like bruno and be watching your birds all the time ,

hi mick ,
you might be luckymick and not get a strike on your birds , i dont think they have set patterns for hunting , they would visit my lofte maybe two or theee days on the trot , then stay away for a week or a fortnight , they are unpedictable i think ,
i had 1 in captiveity , a male, a pigeon would last it three days , [ feral pigeon ] the pigeon would be stripped of all flesh and the bones scraped white, the intestines were eaten the only remains were the skin and feathers the head was snipped of first i might addit woulturn the bird upside down and start at the crop and work its way to the vent.
it never allowed me to see it eating but i observed scrapes along the chest of the pigeon as though it was skinning it with its huge feet , the feet has rough callousise at the joints on the under side of its toes the heel toe , the talons are long and pointed , i might add they are not as fast as they they are cracked up to be , the youg birds could make them look foolish , the only bird they managed to catch was stock birds which were not out very often , ihad to kill more birds than it caught as they came back to the loft like rockets , thats the only time you will see your birds flat out ,
if bye chance you witness a strike , you will be able to get the culprit as they come back for the kill lik the sparrowhawk, they also take carrion at the nest site , they are very nice looking birds , but not very inteligent mick i know this is not helping you with your problen , but it may help when 1 comes knocking on your door tam pepper

extract from songbird survival groupwinter 2006
one kestrel managed to destroy almost a years new stock of several hundred little tern chicks on a beach at yarmouth this summer
the RSPB thought this colony of 200 pairs of comparatively rare little terns importtant enough to mount an expensive operation to gaurd against land based predators but could do little against a protected raptor. the kestrel did not die ,of course ,when it ran out of tern chicks but no boubt moved on to something else .
this illustrates the ridiculous conservation policy we have got ourselves into tam pepper

hi buno .
we are both getting carried away bye our opinions on how to solve the problem of raptor attacks on our birds , you are entitled to your opinion, and i respect it , i am just an ordinary run of the mill pigeon fancier , protecting his birds not looking for aggreement or respect from anyone .
your point on , telling people to get guns, people will read these little snippets and make up their own minds what to do , i am only pointing out the options to them ,
bruno i am perfectly aware that i could be traced that i,m not invisible in computer terms , this limits me on how i can argue my points with you , but without evidence the people who may or not be monitering , can not prosecute anybody .
you seem to have double standards bruno , a problem bird , taken out of the equation bye the use of the appropriate licence is not elitist , my thinking is its still a dead bird bruno .
your use of the words blasting and oblivion are are a bit sensational , after all i am only using an airgun , the airgun is not neccessary , it saves the lives of the birds that are attacked , i can solve the problem bye other methods , but i,m sacrificing
my birds, when it comes to their birds or mine , i thiink theirs will be eliminated
my birds are not the problem ,bye bruno , have a nice day

hi bruno
yer getting carried away with your elitist drivel bruno , i cant for the world of me see how killing raptors can be associated to speeding, airgun shootings, paedophiles, you are obviously upset at me for calling you deafeatist , and you are deafeatist ,
i think i,ll stick to being elitest , and you can stick to being defeatist , you spent a lot of time answering me, 90 per cent of your article was uneccesary, as it was irrelevant .
bruno , i know exactly what the problem is , its not enough human innterference , theres not enough gamekeepers now to fix the imbalance that the r.sp.b. has created .
carry on watching the cormorants and dreaming bruno , your not going to get any concessions fromthe rspb, defra , or the bleached blondes with the red jackets in the scottish parliament , i think deep in your heart you know it

hi bruno
i dont think going out and sorting the problem is defeatist, the opposite i would say , ia am not trying to break the law, i break the law , with great gusto, my i interpretation of defeatist is rolling over and surrendering ,
perhaps you can tell me how many raptors have been taken out under licence, .
bruno you keep watching watching the cormorants on the clyde , and i will carry on killing the vermin , watching cormorants achieves nothing , killing a raptor saves the lives of hundreds of birds

hi bruno
its nice to to see the raptors are in the front line for avian flu , as top of the food chain they will be picking up the birds that are not 100 per cent fit [ infected by the virus ] my only hope it will never reach our shores as it could cause all sorts of problens with our racing programe and the movement of birds .
that picture of bilco with those rings is only a part of the story , most of the birds are killed and eaten away from the nest , they only carry to the nest when the eggs are being incubated and the young are being fed , the latest ring ive picked up is nehu 2004 ec 1467 green ring
its my opinion that the rings were collected from the nest sites by members of the rspb , previous to evidencebeing submitted to the scottish parliament by all interested bodies .
there estimation of the amount of peregrines was laughable . for an organization to introduce peregrines to the cities and towns , without any consultation with other interested bodies [ pigeon fanciers and songbird survival ] is breathtakingly arrogant , but you all knew this already

racing pigeons is in a downward spiral in this country like everything else , we are watching the demise of a once great country , pigeon fancieres ass a whole are very nice friendly people , but terribly apathetic, they moan and groan about things like the price of the feeding , sparrowhawks and peregrines killing their birds , cats you name it they will moan ,
when something good happens like someone starting to train the birds , they say how good this would be , but dont patronise it and it usually stops ,
in our area we had a pet shop start up last year , myselfand another member persuded the owner to stock pigeon food, accesories, grit minerals and all the usuall stuff , she got stocked up most went once or twice then stopped , she told them if she did not have the food they wanted , they could order and it would take a week , she stocked up on all the popular brand name foods i might add the food was 50p a bag dearer and they complained , they frefer to make a 32 mile round trip to save 50p on a bag not 1 of them were buying more than 3 bags at a time some people cant see the wood for the trees .
when some thing good happens , it doesnt last ---------------- tam pepper

hi jimmy
your farting against thunder jimmy , and you know it , the rspb will assess the risk factor on the eagle owl , they will put their reccomendations to defra and defra will carry out the reccomendations without any public consultation , the are in bed together.
jimmy i,m not pinning my hopes on the eagle owlmaking a dent in the peregrine population , this wont happen in my life time , and ive a feeling yours to . the only reason the eagle owl is succesfull i yorkshie is they are nesting on m.o.d property when they leave m.o.d property they will be persecuted by gamekeepers and every body else with shooting interests , the eagle owl preys on everything from a mouse to foxes , they are formidable birds , cats and small dogs are on the menu to ..
it would be nice to think the peregrines are going to be eaten when they roost , but i cant see it keep up your articles jimmy i enjoy them although i dont neccessary agree with you on them all yours in sport tam pepper

sqeaker , if you got the right stock , birds will fly to any loft , scraped or deep litter ,to make the statement that fancier,s on the deep litter are lazy is nonsense , you are assuming your method is the best , ive scraped as often as the rest of you guys , but would never return to that , you are distubing breeding birds , cleaning out boxes every day and they dont like it ,
the main thing is to have a loft that is bone dry , and facing south or southeast , and have the ventiation right .
you would be a brave man to make that statement in the letters to the editor columms in THE BRITTISH HOMING WORLD
