  2. Hi all, My job involves working 7.30-6pm 5 days a week. What exercise could I give young birds? I am off completely on weekends and they could be out all day, just weekdays that is worrying me. Could I get them fit for a race with my work hours? I could take them to work for a training toss in the morning once trained but I work in East Manchester 17 miles from home to work and the club have told me that their races fly from south to North.would this make a difference, as I could do the 20 mile tosses on weekends from the south?
  3. Anyone got a pair of rollers near Manchester?
  4. and use one of the sections in the loft for the breeders? I probably have room for 1-2 stock pairs but that would be it. how many broods does a hen normally have, is it 2-3 per year?
  5. morning lads, if I haven't got the room for stock birds, how do I breed new birds for the following year?
  6. Cheers lads
  7. Red factors, linnet mule and razas. Waiting of a lad to pick them up today

  13. Hi all, Has any of you got any pictures of the inside layout of a small 8x8 or 8x 6 loft. Trying to work out the best way of splitting the room I have got. I plan eventually to keep around 6-8 stock pairs and then need space dividing for cocks and hens. The space I have is an 8x8 shed with double doors on on side. I have screwed one door shut and plan to use that one for trapping. Any pictures much appreciated. Cheers all
  14. Had a look and the test trap for £110 I can make for about £10
  15. Much appreciated the lads gifting me birds to get me going the best advice I have received is to concentrate on getting them flying experience and getting them home. I am not going to worry about places or positions whilst learning. It's all experience. I started on loft today. I got 8 boxes built and put in place, separated the shed in half. Need to sort out some sort of trap. That is my mission tonight. Research traps. Set about making one in the morning.
  16. Cheers for that
  17. How much do vaccinations normally cost?
  18. No,it was a member of the club on committiee. After speaking on here to a few members they have said to pick up what Birds I can, learn the game, and get used to feeding training etc. don't worry about positions in races and to concentrate in getting them home to gain experience. Good advice I think. A few members on here have offered me some birds to get me going which is really generous. Cheers
  19. Cheers for that Neil. Looking at a couple of weeks to get loft ready. After receiving some good advice I'm gonna separate the room I have got. Cheers for all the replies. Top forum
  20. I'm in wythenshawe Manchester. I would like to get an old pair and breed my own. I have bred canaries and finches so I'm not a complete beginner to bird keeping, conditioning etc The fees were to fly my birds and join club. They also said £48 for vaccinations. Is that normal rate.
  21. no mention of giving, just £250 for 6. £25 joining fee and £10 admin should I look for another club?
  22. I have been given a pair of distance birds that I believe were flown from france. the lad that gave me them has packed up had a pair left. he gave them to me yesterday. when I spoke to the club they said that they mostly sprint race and that the distance races are not often. they offered me 6 young birds for £250. would the birds need boxes or be ok on perches? I know a breeding pair would need boxes.
  23. hi all, complete new starter so go easy. I have just returned from my first meeting with my local club. all friendly lads. I have been advised to start with sprint birds. if I was to get some older pairs, could I breed my own young birds or would I be better to buy young birds in when they are ready? do they need boxes or just perches if not breeding?
  24. Ok I made contact and I have been invited to meet a few of the lads in the morning. Plenty of people I can shadow and pick tips off. The birds I have been gifted are distance birds but the lad I spoke to said I would be better with sprinters to start with. They also said they can loan me a clock. Sounds a really friendly bunch.
  25. I have kept birds for years, bred canaries, goldfinches etc. but I will ask at club for advice.
