  1. Thanks Chriss, I am concerned that it is weak through lack of sleep, I was on watch from midnight to mid-day, the work I do, I can keep an eye on the pigeon most of the time, I noticed that it is just like a human, whereby, when tired, the eyes start closing, but anything can disrupt that, especially on a ship. I have deliberately not fed the pigeon, to prevent him from expecting food from me, hoping that he will disembark the vessel and go home. But now he comes straight to me, then turns and walks away, then returns to me etc. He first appeared onboard the day after Typhoon "Rammasun", but prior to that we experienced earthquakes at the ships location off Japan, I was on watch when the bad earthquake rocked and shaked the ship that I am on at 01:45 in the morning. May I just take this opportunity to say, I am onboard an extremely sophisticated ship, it is not a fishing boat or container ship, I also know that every person reading this post relies on the work that I am getting paid to do. Why has there been more questions asked of me, than answers given to how I care for the pigeon??????? best regards Ship Guy
  2. Hi everyone, Just finished my watch, pigeon is fine, he/she REALLY LIKES MUNG BEANS. How much do I feed it? A little and often, or just pile it on it's plate. Basically it has been fed on cracker biscuits since it came onboard, so last night I just gave it the usual amount of biscuits broken up, and added a bit of dried uncooked rice and also a "half a tot" portion of Mung Beans, it went crazy for the mung beans, picking out each individual one, then the rice was eaten, it left some of the biscuits. It has a deep plastic biscuit box for it's fresh water trimmed down to about 6 cms high. Any more guidance is welcome. Has anyone recognised the ring markings? regards Ship Guy too tired to sort out the photo's right now, I need a kip!
  3. That is just the thing about this ship, We are not going anywhere, well not for the next few days anyway, we will still be in this location. I think the pigeon thinks that we are an island! It likes rice and mung beans, sorry no lentils onboard. Ship Guy
  4. Sorry guys, I am an engineer, not a navigator, I meant "the sea off Japan" but I did say we are east of Japan, which we are. Anyway, the bird has a lower light yellow ring and an upper light green ring with the following JPN 07 HK 00583 on the green ring, both these rings are on it's right leg and those numbers are upside down, meaning the bird can read them easily when he looks down at the rings! The last 4 digits are definitely 0583 and the digit before that is also a 0 (I think) The left leg has what appears to be a dark green ring on it, hard to tell, it is dark out here at this moment. 5. As you can see I have only made 4 posts (now 5) on this forum which I joined today. Fortunately the ship I am on has a satellite internet connection. All I am asking is guidance on what to do for the bird. I may add a little bit of humour here and there, but the bird's welfare is the reasoning behind these posts. Ship Guy
  6. I assure you, this is not a wind up. I am back on watch at midnight (ship's time = UK time + 8 hours) I will take a photo of the bird tonight. What should I feed him/her,? the cheesy beano we had for lunch didn't impress the bird too much. We always have fish and chips on friday's. Seriously, I have been giving it fresh water and the only thing it will eat is crumbled up "cracker type biscuits with vegatables in". Ship Guy
  7. The ship is in "The Sea of Japan" east of Japan, Okinawa area. Do not particularly want to get hold of the pigeon, as I don't want to catch a cold or the flu whatever it's called. Ship Guy
  8. We have been in port for a few days, the pigeon did venture off but kept coming back, I did spot a rather large bird flying round in circles (maybe a buzzard or similar) and we sailed from port yesterday. The bird that is left has been onboard for about two weeks now, just getting concerned. Ship Guy
  9. I am onboard a ship currently off Japan. After a recent typhoon 6 racing pigeons and 1 wild pigeon landed onboard. Six have since departed, leaving just one behind. The ship will be away from land for 2 more weeks or so, any suggestions? Ship Guy
