I did not know anything about racing pigeons until yesterday. A bird showed up at my house yesterday morning. I live in Mebane, North Carolina. It could fly a very short distance and about two feet in the air. I easily caught it yesterday afternoon. It is obviously used to being handled. I have it in a large dog crate. I made a bed of horse hay and put a bowl of water in the crate. All I had on hand to feed it was sunflower seeds (like I normally feed my wild birds), some multigrain bread, and then I put some of my horse feed in there. The band has D.A.H. 2001 and 1405. I have talked to a couple of people and they said to feed and water it, keep it safe, and then turn it loose in a few days. However, I am curious as to where it came from. Perhaps that will always be a mystery. I would also like to know if 9 years old is old for a racing pigeon. Thanks for any help that anyone can give me. It is truly a beautiful bird!
