In Egg! (Newbie) (1/8)

  1. Used to spend hours reading and day dreaming the old Squills handbook, shame we can't return to those simple and enjoyable times
  2. Morning Folks I currently don't keep or race pigeons now but hoping maybe to re-start one day but if I do I only want a few just for fun and will probably only be racing Natural to an 8x6 loft, hopefully open hole and keeping to nature as much as possible...I have in the past raced for many years since the early 70s but just fancy keeping about 6 to 8 pairs (no prisoners) total freedom what do you reckon one's chances are in these days...last time I raced was about 2003/4ish and two failed attempts to re-start recently (neighbours from hell) just not worth it at present address at this moment in time, your thoughts greatly appreciated as if I do re-start fancy a crack at the distance.
  3. Used it when I had the birds along with Strike birds always looked well, plenty of down in droppings good stuff in my opinion
  4. Aye Paul had some great results at the distance, dunno if he still races mind, I've been out the scene a long time and lost touch these days.
  5. When I eventually re-start I would be racing into Grimsby on the north east coast of Lincolnshire
  6. Hi Folks at this moment in time I don't keep or race pigeons hoping to re-start again....I originally started keeping pigeons in the early 70s...packed up for a short while in the 80s until I bought my first house about 86ish and raced them reasonable success right through to about 2003/4ish but unsociable working hours and losing interest I packed up...two attempts at re-starting recently but with the neighbours from hell both sides things didn't go to plan, but fingers crossed hoping to re-start again in the future, fancy a bash at the Nationals and maybe Extreme Distance what's your thoughts...distances between 500 and 800 plus miles...am I been a bit crazy or is this were the future of racing is?
  7. Sorry for such a late reply but only just joined the forum....many years ago whilst out vaccinating club members birds we visited the lofts of the late Tony Beedham (Grimsby) to cut a long story short he had 5 hens basketed up he didn't want vaccinating I was a hen short and asked if I could take a very nice Chequer Hen he told me she direct from Honeysuckle Lofts...I took her home paired her to a Blue (Taffy Bowen) Cock he was a decent widowhood cock for me I only bred 2 youngsters from this pair after losing the Cock over the Channel the youngsters a Blue cock and Cheq Hen the hen won Huntingdon 1st Club, 8th Fed and the cock bred several decent pigeons for me....I foolishly killed the mentioned Honeysuckle Hen after losing her mate and before y/b racing commenced so I lost out for been to hasty...I only took her to keep a widowhood cock happy but my hastiness killed a good hen.
  8. No the feeling one side put a massive trampoline right in front of loft.....our yards are small only 30ft x 10ft....so can be upto 6 or 7 kids jumping up and down and screaming continually morning and night and other side just as bad but at back of shed....he would put either a gazebo tent up on a fri, take it down put an hot tub up for his kids, or trampoline or continually burn rubbish play loud music ect absolute tossers both sides....soon as I got shut of birds No gazebo, no trampoline, no rubbish burning so obviously they did it on purpose....most of the neighbours got cats aswell lol....yet been at this address 30 odd years and was great back in 80s/90s raced with reasonable success....and when I raced in the 70s was great then too....but rented tenants with feral unruly kids it's not worth it at moment.
  9. Not sure Neila been out the game awhile now, tried to re-start a couple of times but packed up after just a few months last year....unfortunately we have the neighbours from hell both sides of us...it was a nightmare and no enjoyment...but hopefully re-start again one day.
  10. Personally it's a shame we don't all race natural again...over the years I have raced both natural and widowhood and won on both methods, but there's something more enjoyable about natural...but if your competitive like most of us, then widowhood gives you that edge. But some of these modern early breeding and darkness methods are messing with nature and I think contribute to losses and illness. Back in the 70s I would breed 15 youngsters and still have 11 or 12 after racing.
  11. Hello I'm from Grimsby raced on and off for 40 odd years....don't keep pigeons at the moment but it's a good area to Race some top flyers in both club and Fed...best of luck, hoping to re-start again one day but neighbour troubles it's not worth it at present.
  12. Years ago a lot of fanciers used to pair up on 14th Feb but times have changed...it's been awhile since I last raced but I know some fanciers are pairing up in November....not sure I agree with this but modern methods ect, been a bit of an old school fancier and not really into young bird racing I think if I was racing natural I would pair up about mid/late Feb to early March.
  13. The first pigeons I had were Barker based although not pure I got them off my late uncle Sonny Borrill in the early 70s...they all originated from a 65 rung Blue Cock and a 70 rung Black Hen as far as I remember they were about 75% Barker with a touch of Kirkpatrick and Hansenne Blood...they were plodders mind but good on hard days but not good at sprint.
