    Scout

Hello, does anyone know the breeding of Scout, the bird Jim Biss purchased from Pierre Dordin ? Thanks Oz

    Jim Biss

Hello from Australia, just watched a video on Jim Biss and his pigeons, can anyone tell me how much they raised when auctioned after his passing ?. The loft and birds looked magnificent and we have have guessed about 400 thousand pounds but could be well off. Cheers Oz
  3. Rota Virus (Young bird sickness) is rampant in Australia, the rack em and stack em flyers get the virus before even training their birds, they keep hundreds of birds and they soon catch the virus. I believe it is because the birds get stressed, fighting for perch space, food etc and are susceptible to any disease going, they then train them too early after the virus and wreck the season for the rest of us.They then repeat this every year and even breed more youngsters to make up for the ones that die. Next year I intend to borrow a couple of sick birds and mix them with mine long before the racing season starts, hopefully they will be ok to race after about 3 months, otherwise I will be forced to give up racing and just keep a few in the garden. Cheers Oz
  4. How long do flyers in the UK wait, before resuming racing after your birds have had young bird sickness. In Oz I waited 6 weeks after Rota Virus hit the birds and it was a disaster, lost half the team, obviously they were not healthy enough as I would have expected them all home from the distance I sent them. They all looked ok, loft flying well and had a couple of training tosses. Cheers Oz PS. has anyone come up with any bright ideas on how to avoid the virus, we all catch it as soon as we use our training truck, it contains birds from about 20 flyers. If we train alone, the losses to hawk attacks are excessive.
  5. Thanks folks, looks like an electric fence is the way to go...................Cheers Oz
  6. What is the best Ultrasonic Cat Repeller on the market ?. If possible on EBAY as a lot of companies do not export to Australia but those on Ebay seem happy to do so. I am confused because as well as repelling cats, they also scare birds which obviously I do not want. Thanks Oz
  7. On Saturday we held a 5 bird special race from The Twins in South Australia 389 miles away, there was a total of 280 birds, the first bird completed the race in 4 hours and 3 minutes at an average speed of 95.5 miles per hour, there was another dozen which came in very close. How does that compare with the flying speeds in Europe. I hasten to add that for a lot of the way there was a very strong wind blowing in in the direction of home. In the open race of 2000 birds they produced speeds of about 92 mph and many birds ( mine included) were blown past Adelaide and returned a few hours later taking about 7 hours to complete the race. This really was a blow home. Cheers Oz
  8. Dear all, can you tell me if a vaccine or medicine has been developed for young bird sickness in the UK ?. In Australia we have Rota virus, the symptoms seem much the same, at present the Vets are trying to develop a vaccine to prevent the pigeons catching the virus, are they wasting their time ?. Thanks Oz
  9. Thanks for the suggestions, will see if I can obtain some of the medicines recommended. So far in our club 12 of the 16 flyers have the Rota virus in their lofts and have suffered heavy losses. the rest of us have just crossed our fingers and hoped it will miss us. It started in Western Australia and has in about a year, spread across the rest of Australia. Some Federations have agreed not to race this year, others are just waiting to see how long it lasts in their area. It strikes old and young birds and the only ones that seem to not get infected are very old birds over about 8 years old. Thanks Oz Ps. I am a member of Let,s talk pigeon talk, this is one of our forums in Australia, if your interested have a look at it and see what we get up to in Oz.
  10. Have any of flyers in the UK had the Rota virus in their loft and if so, do you know of a cure or preventative medicine. The symptoms are as follows 1. birds vomit up food. 2. will not eat 3. green slimey smelly droppings. 4. dead . All within 2 days, we are losing thousands of birds in Australia as it seems to be an airborn virus and any loft can get it whether they let their birds out or keep them in. It kills old birds as well as youngsters. Our vets say that it will take them at least a year to make a vaccine, so it looks like a lot of racing will be cancelled this year. When I was a youngster in the UK many years ago, it looked similar to a bird "going lite" but is much more agressive and spreads very easily. Thanks Oz
  11. Looks like our Association in South Australia have got it wrong, for mechanical clocks I see it is 5 secs per hour in the UK and 1 sec per hour for the electro/mechanical quartz clocks. They have just applied the 1 sec per hour over the lot. Thanks Oz
  12. What is the allowable error fast or slow your association allows for the old mechanical clocks ?. Ours allows 1 second plus or minus per hour over the race time, if the error is greater , time penalties are imposed. Is this about the same as in the UK. Cheers Oz.
  13. WHAT DO YOUR ASSOCIATIONS PUT ON THE FLOOR OF THE RACE BASKETS USED IN THE RACE TRANSPORTERS. WE IN OZ ARE TRYING THE FOLLOWING 1. 25X25 WIRE MESH; 2.CORRUGATED CARDBOARD, WE HAVE ALSO USED WOOD SHAVINGS AND STRAW, BOTH OF THESE GOT A BIT MESSY ESPECIALLY STRAW AND WERE DIFFICULT TO CLEAN OUT OF THE TRANSPORTER.MOST RACES, THE MAXIMUM TIME IN THE RACE BASKETS IS 36 HOURS, AS THE WEATHER IS MORE PREDICTABLE HERE AND WE HAVE VERY FEW HOLD OVERS. CHEER OZ
  14. Our association is about to purchase a new 3500 bird race transporter from Geraldy, Germany, have you had any experience with their products either good or bad, as I understand they sell all over Europe. Cheers Oz
  15. Has anyone opened up a Tipes club scanner to do a repair. At our club we have one with a broken 12v connector, it looks a simple job to repair but the scanner has to be opened to get at the connector. Here in Australia we have to send them back to Germany and it will cost about the price of a new scanner to get the repair done. Thus if we can repair it here for a few dollars it will save us heaps. Cheers Ozzy
