In Egg! (Newbie)

In Egg! (Newbie) (1/8)

  1. Solent Fed are at Perth-about 380 miles to me. Liberation tomorrow (Friday)
  2. is it John ThOmson, fancy pigeon man from Falkirk you are looking for?
  3. Update! I trawled the internet on Tuesday night and found an email address of a Norwegian fancier-sent him a message asking if he could help recover the bird from the non fancier. I got a reply Wed morning saying he knew of the nearest fancier to the bird (2 hours!) and would ask if he would help. Wednesday afternoon that fancier emailed to say he had collected him already and would like to keep him-all sorted in under 24 hours! The power of the internet and the goodwill of some fellow fanciers! Neil
  4. Well after Alabama Bob I now have one reported-missing from a liberation in Perth, supposedly racing to Hampshire.......reported in Northern Norway. They said the wind at liberation was "light westerly"....clearly got the direction spot on!! Have heard of 3 others from the fed reported in Denmark....what makes them strike out across 600 miles of sea? Any ideas how to get him home? 🙂
  5. Hi Dale-Could ypu whatsapp me a sale list please ?

    Thanks, Neil

  6. Judging by the numbers missing and how many I am hearing about locally....I fear the statement above I may soon regret!1
  7. I live in Hampshire and commute in and out of North London every day-happy to pick up anything on that route and help repatriate to the better side of the border. Neil 07510 500071
  8. Agree-I race in the south of England-Hampshire, about 90 miles or so due west of Maidstone. We had full cloud cover all day down here which doesnt help. Our birds (Solent SR fed) were racing from Wetherby (200 miles plus) liberated in sunshine but returns well below 50% and velocities of 1,000ypm or less. Many Feds down here racing from West to East (racepoints in Devon/ Cornwall) had equally bad days with very slow races and shocking returns. My 3rd bird home landed on the loft roof and then sat there for 25 minutes in what looked like a trance, never seen anything like it. My later pigeons on Saturday which had "been on the wing" for 12 hours, felt like they hadn't been out the loft-certainly hadn't been flying very much. Spoke to a fancier in Farnborough tonight who had 6 racers land on his house roof on Sunday, knackered and just sat there-managed to get 1 in for a feed today-it was Scottish rung. Im a new starter so cannot explain what happened but I have seen and heard enough to know this was nothing to do with the SNFC, the transporter or the liberation-something weird in the atmosphere for sure. We did have thunderstorms in the south on Thursday night-perhaps that left "something" in the atmosphere? I never saw the grand prix this weekend but apparently the team radios had problems which they said was due to atmospherics?

  10. At least we all know now how the doos feel when we lock them up all winter for their own protection....payback time!
  11. Sad to hear that Bob has passed away-an absolute legend in the UNC and the man who gifted me four top class birds when I started 2 years ago. RIP and condolences to his family.
  12. Good question this, and one I thought about when I started up in 2017. I live in Hampshire in the south, and set my sights on 500 mile plus racing-Tarbes with the NFC being my ambition. However being from Scotland originally, and being fascinated / captivated by the writings of Rod Adams and his Bourges obsession, I have built a team of birds from pigeons obtained from the best of the SNFC / UNC distance lofts (Rod Adams, Bob Donaldson of Chevington Drift, and W.Kinnear and son Edinburgh)-all winners of the biggest prize at 500 mile plus in those organisations. I have yet to test them as I spent the last 2 years getting a team of pigeons ready in sufficient number bred from a nucleus of 5 pairs of the best from these lofts-2020 will be my first year pushing them to see what there made of. Personally I am convinced that well bred pigeons from tried and tested lofts at the distance will do it, no matter where the water is on the journey-time will tell I guess, but looking forward to the undoubted roller coaster of emotion ahead! I will update this thread in a few years to come when I have come to a conclusion on this one!
  13. A good friend of mine (Matt Donoghue from Stirling) had a yearling dark red show racer hen taken from its pen at Turiff show. Ring number GB 18 SR 03342. Any help from anyone on here who lives that way would be appreciated. He has a name that has been suggested (which I wont post!) and would be keen to hear from anyone who knows anything. The bird is quite distinctive as it is a very dark red colour compared to most red show racers. Matt can be contacted on 07957 596635 or you can pm me. Many Thanks Neil
  14. I have bred loads of red eyed young birds in my fancy pigeon days-this will not be an albino -I think that would be a one in a million chance. The only colour that throws pink eyes in youngsters (and the pink goes away by 10 days) is the colour brown, and its recessive Khaki. Brown can appear in a variety of shades, and can be confused with silver-likewise khaki is often confused with cream. If neither of the parents are Khaki or brown, then the cock bird will be carrying one of these colours. As these are the most recessive of the different colour groups, the the youngster will almost certainly be a hen. If the pink stays in the eye then you have an albino, but i would be surprised. Neil
