Chipping (2/8)

  1. Good job you weren’t using a Toulet!
  2. An interesting letter from the Scottish borders area, page 37, talking about the amount of garden birds the sparrow hawk takes each year and also mentions the damage done to pigeon racing. Looks like it was written by someone either from or closely linked to pigeon racing. Good letter but probably 15 years too late to have any impact.
  3. No I didn’t get a reply from the rep
  4. Thanks for the reply. I will try and get someone with the same system to try and narrow down the problem.
  5. The widow of a former club mate asked me to look at her late husband’s Benzing ets system to see if it could be passed on to someone still in the sport. It is a G2 clock. When cable between clock and controller unit is connected then power supply turned on there are no lights showing on the controller unit and nothing on the clock display. I have tried both 12v battery and 240v power supplies with no success. I have contacted the Scottish benzing ets rep asking for advice but I have not received a reply. I don’t know exactly how old the system is but it was bought from the above rep within the first couple of years after ets systems were permitted to be used by the RPRA. Any advice would be appreciated.

Well done to Sid & Alan Jones (Jonesy) 1st Region F and well fancied with a nice wee lift on the pools
  7. I’m sure I read somewhere that Back in the days before life rings were introduced you had to have your youngsters squeak at ringer before they could enter YB races to prove they were actually youngsters
  8. No, I was talking about clay nest pans
  9. I always found it safest to pass a bit of tie-wire (very thin galvanised wire used for gardening etc) though the centre and then through the holes in the nest pan and twist the ends tight. This stops the felt from sliding when birds get on/off the nest as I had a few smashed eggs before I started doing this.
  10. I have a hen which was purchased for a considerable sum at a late bred sale in 2013. She went through the whole of last season without laying being tried with 3 different cocks. I split her up early hoping that she would be OK for this year but she shows no sign of laying and all other birds are now sitting a few days. During the winter when I bought her I noticed her wing drooping very slightly, but she has been otherwise OK. Is there a chance that floating eggs under her and allowing her to rear might kick-start her ovaries and allow her to start laying? She is very well bred and I am desperate to get ybs off her. Any advice would be appreciated.
  11. I would be interested if still available. I will send you a pm
  12. PM me your address and I'll send you an A ring
  13. I first started the doos in 1976, I joined the local club which had about 15 lofts the following year, it was soon time to ring my first ever pair of ybs. I was so raw and a bit nervous, the first one which turned out to be a big long cast dark cock, I managed to break it's foot putting the ring on, my neighbour, advised me to dispose of it but being only a lad I did'nt have the heart to, it survived the training and went to every race, in the last yb race (think it was Burtonwood) he was the only bird timed in the club. As a yearling he had 3-4 races and I decided to send him to longest inland race (Dorchester). When I got to the club one or two smart comments were made about me throwing it away, A yearling going to the south coast? Thats a mistake son etc. Away he went, the birds were up and it was a right Dreich day, I timed him around tea time and again he was the only bird on the day in the club and took a fed ticket. That pigeon with its gammy leg raced and regularly won tickets for the next 3 or 4 years but was eventually lost. His nestmate, a beautiful blue hen also won but was killed by a cat. What strain? Both sire and dam were strays which I caught using a landing net on my pals roof. Those were the days!
  14. Anyone see the TV programe yesterday morning? this one was from Asia, Showed the feral pigeons living in the walled cities being chased and taken by Buzzards (long legged type) the Buzzards here dont seem interested in pigeons. Also saw pigeons being taken by Black Kestrels. In India where Black Rats are sacred, it showed the feral pigeons scrapping with the long tails for food left out in the temples, loads of Indians feeding the rats and letting them run over their feet! Gave me the Heebeegeebies
  15. Where would I get this from?
