suspect85 Posted April 5, 2014 Report Share Posted April 5, 2014 Hello to you all, first time poster and asking for help advice and asssitance please, ok here goes recently a pigeon has been coming to my balcony for food, along with a few others however this pigeon has what looks like a broken leg, it's broken in what would be our (human) knee joint, sorry if I don't know any technical terms, he or she of course cant really put any weight on it so it must be in pain any i don't really know what to do obviously I would like to take it to a vet but would a vet just say its a wild pigeon in pain put it to sleep ? is a broken leg repairable ? I don't mind paying for a treatment so thats not an issue I just dont really know what to do for the best, now I must say when its feeding it seems quite happy and is happy to mix with the other birds, oh and it's got a red tag / ring on its ankle (?!!) so i'm guessing it belongs to somebody !!Any assistance greatly appreciatedMarcus Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Guest IB Posted April 5, 2014 Report Share Posted April 5, 2014 Broken legs must be part and parcel of everyday living in the wild, and Nature usually has a way of taking care of things like this. If a racing pigeon injures or breaks a leg, it keeps that leg off the ground, and hops around on the remaining good one. Keeping the injured leg off the ground puts any broken parts under the correct tension and alignment to allow healing. When the bond becomes strong enough, usually after 7-10 days, the bird starts to put weight on the injured leg again, and will limp on it for another week or so, after that both legs are used normally.
