Solution was dabbing with a cotton bud dipped in surgical spirit. The mites live under the skin or in the quill holes. Within two days the one with the small patch was sorted but after about a week there was no noticeable difference with the bald neck. However after about a month (this bird had been getting worse for about 18 months) the bird was completely sorted. Surgical spirit is the quick and cheap answer. Paint on liberally over entire affected area till absolutely soaked and repeat after 3 days. This method kills anything under the skin and in the Quill and I post from experience as I cured 18 birds last year which hardly had a whole feather on the back, chest, crop and under their wings.
