JSTOON
Soul destroying buddy, its not a rat though, it will either be a weasel, mink or pole cat. Rats tend to take small amount at a time. I know there illegal, but if you know anybody who has a gyn trap, thats the best mate. Ive youngsters that will be hatching in about two weeks time, let me no by pm if your still short.
Guest IB
Sorry for your loss. Before you bring in any more birds you will need to correct the weakness in your loft design. Almost anything is capable of burrowing under a wire mesh wall, foxes for example were notorious for doing it in hen runs. Advice on this forum on building aviaries has been that the wire mesh must be continued a couple of feet beyond the floor into the ground, and the bottom 2-3 feet of the pen walls should be solid boards to protect the birds from prying eyes. It looks like a slab floor he has from the pics, good thick spread of lime below anything you have deters the tunnellers and will any nasties that that get washed in

pjc
keep the trap set, if they have had a good feed they may not return for a few days! Do you live near water, i.e river, large stream etc?
