Soul destroying buddy, its not a rat though, it will either be a weasel, mink or pole cat. Rats tend to take small amount at a time. I know there illegal, but if you know anybody who has a gyn trap, thats the best mate. Ive youngsters that will be hatching in about two weeks time, let me no by pm if your still short.

Sorry for your loss. Before you bring in any more birds you will need to correct the weakness in your loft design. Almost anything is capable of burrowing under a wire mesh wall, foxes for example were notorious for doing it in hen runs. Advice on this forum on building aviaries has been that the wire mesh must be continued a couple of feet beyond the floor into the ground, and the bottom 2-3 feet of the pen walls should be solid boards to protect the birds from prying eyes.

It looks like a slab floor he has from the pics, good thick spread of lime below anything you have deters the tunnellers and will any nasties that that get washed in ;)

sorry to hear of your very sad loss wrm it makes you wonder after loosing all your young birds last year,hope your unlucky streak ends with a bang and your luck will change if ide had youngsters turned over you could have had second nest but mine are just sitting eggs now,if want some of the second round your welcome to have some good look my friend.

sorry to hear about your loss, i had a mink in my loft this winter, instead of killin g any birds he killed 3 pet rabbits,

when i came to the loft he was s till there. so i called someone in with a gun and he was shot,

that same mink escaped from a mink ranch a mile out, :-/

i would die if it happend to me,

WRM have you found out how it or they got into your birds yet?

 

Nothing in trap Dovescottt......I can only guess that whatever did this got in through the lower part of the stall trap.........as the landing board was fasted in the upright position....

 

such is life  ;)

i believe this could be a rat as  i had something similar up on the farm, so get so rat poison in is you can mate or get a dead pigeon and fill it with poison or crushed paracetamol to ove dose the little bugger!

I have seen some guinea pigs ripped to bits just like in your photo and that was rats so could be :-/,they are also alot more comon than anything else that could have done it.
