WulDon Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 this one for all the distance experts on here... what, in your opinion is: 1. the best wing condition for sending to 500 miles? 2. how far into the wing moult would you send? 3. how many days before basketting would be the last training toss?

Guest stb- Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 (edited) 1.1st or 2nd flight half way up on basket. 2.not after 5th flight because big moult kicks in. 3.Saturday for 500+ miles, Friday for 600+,agree with 1 and 2 ,, 3 would depend on how they were handling for me but normally stop at the weekend thts weather permiting might go a day or 2 longer if weathers stoped the build up Edited July 6, 2012 by stb-
hotrod Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 i agree with dels 1 but 2 ? naw no further than the 3rd (to get the best out of them )maybe push it to the 4th , 3 as stb says all depends on how the training went ,but normally last toss would be sunday for thursday basket or saturday for wednesday basket.
Delboy Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 I asked the great Geoff Kirkland about a hen I was sending to the national with her 4th and 5th flight thrown at once..I knew this was a sign she was in great condition but had my doubts about the big moult kicking in.He said he never looked at the wings and to go with my gut feeling.I understood what he meant as the hen was bouncing. She was sent and was 3rd section SNFC.

Delboy Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 SUPER FORM DEL A PIT THE CASH ON WHEN THERE LIKE THAT . NO THAT OFTEN YOU GET IT THOUGH Dont know about super form but very good nick Bob.Super form , if your lucky , hits your loft maybe once in 10-15 years. You could send one bird to 1000 miles and get it. Ive had it a couple of times, couldnt do anything wrong.2nd west region twice in 7 days ( 550 mls and 630 mls ) and then 1st west region a few weeks later.Dream stuff m8.
andy Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 Never bother about wing condition being a widowhood flyer as the season usually over when they've just dropped their third flight, however my Ypres National winner last year dropped his 2nd and 3rd flight 2 days apart before being basketted for the race. Happy Days

Happy Days Andy, you never pooled him lol.
Guest Gareth Rankin Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 Merilan Eittiene won Narabone internationa last year by a hen that chucked her 4th and 5th flight at the one time. It's what's in their head that we need to worry about.
dal2 Posted July 6, 2012 Report Posted July 6, 2012 Agree with all but Jock Jamieson said to me that he never looked at wing and only went by condition and breeding!!! I would not bother with training, If they have say 6-7 hours on wing three weeks before basketing then thats enuff!! Have scored before with birds that have done 5hrs then sat at home for a month and scored well!!1 Horses for courses I suppose?? Experienced course and distance birds can be handled a lot diffo and condition and motivation become your main concern???
WulDon Posted July 7, 2012 Author Report Posted July 7, 2012 some great answers there lads... and some terrific moments mentioned also
hotrod Posted July 7, 2012 Report Posted July 7, 2012 yes if a bird drops 2 flights at once its a good sign but i would rather it was the first and second than the 4th and 5th, in pigeon racing there is ALWAYS the exception , yes pigeons have won on there 4th or 5th flight but how many havent scored got lost turned up weeks later or never turned up ? .
peter pandy Posted July 7, 2012 Report Posted July 7, 2012 The great Eddie Newcombe told me never to send when the 4th drops out as the covers start to throw. Its something I personally have adhered to.
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted July 8, 2012 Report Posted July 8, 2012 Young bird-darkness vs early bred? Darkie with 8 or 9 nest flights or early bred with 8 or 9 adult fights which will win??
