Guest strapper Posted April 25, 2012 Report Posted April 25, 2012 if yes why if no why? would you use it for sprint distance?
Wiley Posted April 25, 2012 Report Posted April 25, 2012 Personally it wouldn't be for me strapper I like a variety of grains in my mix there just isn't enough choice for the birds on widowhood. However I feel it would be successful for the moult due to the sulphur content

Guest strapper Posted April 25, 2012 Report Posted April 25, 2012 Hi Paul looks a bit like a young bird mix to me,sprint I would add barley and popcorn maize JMO hi lindsay m8....its a mix i was gonna try..its brean and wean but i added mixed peas and some barley. i did wonder to use some maize.
greenlands Posted April 25, 2012 Report Posted April 25, 2012 Some fanciers fly well on feed such as gerry plus,I think maize is a must, but others will differ, that's pigeons.
andy Burgess Posted April 25, 2012 Report Posted April 25, 2012 if yes why if no why? would you use it for sprint distance?its looks a fair mix Paul , i would say fine for youngsters to race on (wouldnt expect to win on it ,but would expect fair returns) as for older birds ,not for me , as mentioned , a large percentage of "gerry plus" into it and it would be better .
Wiley Posted April 25, 2012 Report Posted April 25, 2012 what would you add ? For me the protein content would have to be brought down and replaced with carbs and fats. I would use this on return however but would soon be changed after a few days if I had to use this

Guest Owen Posted April 25, 2012 Report Posted April 25, 2012 Paul, you need to reduce the brown grain content, maple peas. Brown skinned grain is not good for sprint racing because of the tannin content. If you go on the Ministry site you will see that they do not recommend more that 15% of brown skinned grain in any diet. I reckon that the mix should contain around 50% barley. That is best quality feed grade barley not malting barley. Years ago the sprint racers used to feed cut maize and wheat with barley added. They would put the feed into the hopper and when the birds started to leave the barley they would pick up the hopper. If you want to feed brown skinned grain you need to make certain that the birds have a daily supply of clay blocks to help to reduce the effects of the tannin. You will know when this diet works for you because you will find that the birds will fly much better and a lot higher. The one down side to this type of feeding is that if you are like me you will be scared to watch them fly at the height because I do not want to witness a peregrine attack.

alex young Posted April 26, 2012 Report Posted April 26, 2012 Strapper as you say it's breed and wean,I am using it now for my darkness y/b while they are moulting.I also use it for my sprint pigeons on return from racing to replace worn muscle,I mix it at the rate of 1/3 b/wean 1/3 diet 1/3 wid mix fed sat/sun.Mon/Tues I feed 50/50 diet/wid. Wed. onwards 100% wid/mix.I've been doing this a few years now and the birds are flying well on it.When I fed breakdown mix I couldn't get them to fly much early in the week but on the above mix they fly well from the sunday morning and through the week.atb.
