That's why I asked, given the comment "and you wonder why they don't get home".

Birds were flying into a head wind and dodging hedges and cars.

There are certainly more cars about nowadays than there used to be.

Head winds keep them low often in an attempt to use the hedges, etc to buffer the wind.
