Old Birds Clashing

Looks like one of the main topics for the forthcoming year will undoubtedly be clashing,does anyone have any evidence/experience of large scale losses due to Old birds clashing,imo the occasional bird going off course can occur at any time and I know over the years we all have probably had birds come into our loft that have sometimes overshot their lofts big time (Dutch birds for example) but do people believe that once old birds have left the lib site and are on their way that they will suddenly do a 180 degree turn and head off with another batch ? Imo if they did then they wouldn't be much of a loss.

When they are homing and they are attacked by peregrines do they not sometimes scatter? They may increase or decrease flying height, they may turn in any direction. Do they become overcome with terror?

 

If any of these events occur, they may tie in with pigeons from other liberations. This may not be a conventional clashing, but the effects may be the same. :)

It's a theory but if it happened if would surely be classed as unavoidable

Never believed in Clashing... maybe once in a blue moon.

Live a few hundred yards from Wickstead park. Several liberartions. Sky filled, but never seen my youngsters homing from a race bothered. They just fly through and land.

Breeze/ wind means pigeons fly at different hieghts.. likewise strengths.. So if going same way may be same hieghts... but then ALL races have flocks flying together.... BUT seperate when breaking free. As race results show every week.

 

NOW if youngster let UP with a fed, same time and what not, like I and many other fanciers used to do giving the y/b's their first liberaration,, some get carried away naturally. They arrive back all hours, or next morning... a few reported true, this stood them in great stead. Does them the world of good.

Some of us are old enough to remember the clashing that occurred in the past when the big Welsh North road feds and a lot of English feds came north.

Good race controlling will be essential

 

Having raced over 40 years I can remember much larger libs of both Welsh and English feds up here in the North East but honestly can't remember definite clashing occuring

George when there far apart they will race right by each other it’s when libs are only a few miles apart and get up at similar times that’s the worst thing that can happen the same when perigrine strikes if the attack at lib point it’s can be horrendous return wise .

Communication between organisations is essential, surely a Web/media page could be set up for all UK liberation information, feds clubs etc could post all information regarding liberations... Allowing controllers to reduce the risk of clashing.

Go as far to say that shu/rpra could enforce a rule of any liberation over certain number of birds must be posted on said page.

Lost count of number of times feds have liberated birds on one route only for another fed on opposite route to go a miles or two up the road.

Stuart i totally agree about libs within a short distance but not if birds are on there way (say half an hour as a rough guide) the peregrine thing could not be attributed to clashing imo

George at any point in past when you were the race controller with the North Fed did you take into consideration any other liberations that were taking place close to or in the line of flight of birds you were controlling ??

 

It's a major part of the job !! But if the sky is going to get a whole lot busier this year there will always be birds on the line of flight so a very difficult balance will have to be found

in years way back we have lost big kits of young birds when training scooped up with large flocks of pigeons going south from late libs from around fraserburgh and so on well good luck.

 

Young birds are a different matter and without doubt will follow the flock

Communication between FEDS must be the answer to this ,out of interest sake does Ayr north roaders talk to North East fed on race day ? .Why dont North road feds race on alternate days from South road Feds ie you race Saturdays one week and Sunday the next just a thought .

What if there is a holdover on Sat because of bad weather what do you do???????

Cancel the race that week normally they sus out what the weather is doing before hand ,but yes i see your point its not that simple .If a lot of English Feds turn north its nae going to be very easy getting a clear run ,but hey the racing hasnt been all that great for returns with out that happening so we will just have to put up with it i am afraid .
