Dagenham South Road

Audeat-est-facere

For those that doesn’t speak French it translates “To dare is to doâ€, which is Tottenham’s motto. I need to get that out there as being the only Tottenham Hotspurs fan in the marking station, a Spurs reference is needed every now and then, in a West Ham dominant marking station. I am adopting this motto as the Dagenham South Road’s official motto from now on, because only those who have took the leap of faith on the south, are those that will achieve.

As Delboy said “He who dares winsâ€, and Slav Zielinski done what many of the whispers outside of the marking station said no-body would do. He topped the mighty Thames and Northern Eastern Counties Club on the last race of the season from Chichester, where he took 1st and 7th open. On the north road, I remember some of the top names in a certain north road federation talking about having to give 2 miles overfly to the longest flyer in their federation, can you imagine racing on the south in the Thames? Slav flying a distance of 67 miles, and on this particular race his competitors flying 44 miles further at 111, I wonder if that was the case on the old north road what the conversations would be then? It as I have said before it is not for the faint hearted, especially for those members of our marking station who still are head strong on the north road mentality and still want to compete week in week out at the sprint competitions. Slav, done a marvellous feat he took the Dagenham’s cherry, and he will be one of many for the marking station in the future to achieve this feat. Slavs winning pigeon was a Blue Leo Heremans cock bird, racing to the perch on his first race of the season. Many will remember when I was scribe for the London North Road combine, I visited Slav’s home after a young bird combine, when Slav if memory serves me right was 3rd open, and I described his loft layout as one of the best I have visited, with many nooks and crannies and hiding places, with a corridor that runs at the back of the loft, I also said this wouldn’t be the last we heard of this gentleman, and I still stand by that statement today. All the members wish you congratulations Slav, the first of many I am sure.

North Vs South Divide

You hear me quote North road mentality in many of my articles. Now, on the north road the mentality is to race week in week out through the entire season, and as a must you must be competitive from Peterborough 70 miles all the way through to Thurso 510 miles. IT IS A MUST!!!! There are no exceptions, week in week out you must send, and you must win. South road mentality is much different. On the South road, especially in the Thames, use the short races for training and experience, and look to be competitive at the channel events. Remembering why the Thames was formed I mentioned in an article a few months back, it was to prepare birds for the channel event. What you will find with those that have the south road mentality will be they will use the short races right up until the first channel race with their chosen specialist club. They will then send bi-weekly only to their chosen specialist club or clubs over the channel, and maybe return to their short club, to get some training time, into the birds for their next channel race, as some of their birds may sit out and not race for some 2 to 4 weeks depending on the distance they are wanting to race in. Notice the difference between training time and racing. These south road mentality fanciers will not even take out a clock for these short distance races/training (depending on what mentality you choose to follow).

The rise of the grizzles

“Where have all the grizzles come from?†Is it just me, but where ever you look now, all you see is grizzles. I remember reading many years ago to improve a family’s feather quality that fanciers would introduce grizzles. Now I am not so certain this is the case any longer. When looking online now, at these auction houses that appear to be new ones appearing each and every week, these grizzles regardless of the family seem to make much more money than there Blue, Chequers, Red or Mealy siblings. Studs, now seem to have grizzles as one of their biggest money spinners, and you can see the number of studs with online shopping facilities that these grizzles are the first to be bought, when they offer a fresh selection of pigeons. Now am I being cynical not every one of these buyers are trying to improve the feather qualities of their pigeons.

Sayonara for now
