Thoughts on pigeon racing 2020

I have been watching Gordon Ramsey’s kitchen disasters for some time now and liken it to pigeon fanciers. All the restaurateurs have asked for his help because either they, or their partners /wives have realised they are going bust fast and requested help. On arrival Gordon does all the usual things, i.e. tastes the food, checks the kitchen operation and how the kitchen’s hygiene standards are. He finds the problems and tries to resolve them only to find one or more of the owners or chefs will not accept his recommendations because they know best even though there are either no customers or more food dishes come back than get eaten. The problem is the customers do not appreciate good food cooked well, and everyone is wrong except them. The funny thing is others restaurants round about are thriving !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, just think about pigeon racing please. Are there some similarities or is it coincidence we are in the same boat as these failing restaurants, i.e. poor returns, sick birds, YBS every year and massive losses? Guess what? We blame others, usually the race controller and everyone else in our sight.

It is amazing when failure is staring you in the face how quickly we all blame others and it does not matter in which trade /job /profession /hobby we all seem to believe it is someone else’s fault.

About 2004 I had it pointed out to me by the best vets I know that pigeons need health treatments to keep them healthy because of the very nature of the hobby. I have watched the increase of the supposed Young Bird Disease creep up the country since then and how we have all come to accept is as normal (there is no such a disease as young bird sickness) it is a pigeon fanciers excuse for his / her bad management.

By now I should have your attention and you are telling me this is a load of tripe. Well, guess what Gordon’s restaurateurs say to him. Now, think about it or is it too hard to work out? Do you want to be like Gordon’s people who ask for help and be in total denial? You, like them need HELP and soon or you and doo racing will go bust.

I hear you say “but who can help us†Start with yourself, look at your loft and birds. Are they what you want? Do they perform as you would like are your returns poor? Do you get YBs regularly and are you enjoying your hobby? If the answer to these questions is not yes to them all, something is wrong and you, as the loft manager IS to blame

Remember, no one is due you anything regarding pigeons. You have taken them on board so it is YOUR responsibility to look after them. Not just to feed water and clean them out, that is the least you have to do. Pigeon racing has changed in the last 20 years but pigeon fanciers have not. It’s time for a shakeup, big style and let’s admit it, we are in need of it. In all honesty what can be worse than where we are now.

Health is a must if you wish to change

You need a health system to improve your birds

It is not as expensive as something that does not work

The appliance of science is your best and proven way forward it is a tool to be used for your benefit so use it or lose out. The choice is yours.

If it was down to to the fancier and his birds health that make up all the losses, surely those who regularly treat their birds and stick to a strict regime will have a loft full of birds, as they dont have many or no losses? Even top fliers experience bad losses and surely they know a pigeons health, unless they just get lucky to be at the top of the sheet each week. Sounds like you follow a treatment regime, did you suffer many losses the last season or 2?

Feed, water and clean them out is the basics and yes it's the least that is required. But by doing this properly, ie. feeding good clean food and fresh drinking water keeping a dry loft then the pigeons should thrive.

Meds are obviously required from time to time and supplements could help give an edge if used correctly, but we don't half complicate matters, any novice/new starts are up against it from the off with all the potions and pills in the market today.

Only my opinion, and the reason I don't medicate (unless a problem arises) is I don't have a vast knowledge of different medicines/diseases etc and I don't want to as in my opinion a little bit of knowledge is very dangerous, and would rather look at the condition and performance of birds amd the seek expert advice if I wasn't happy.
