I’ve had a good feedback on my remarks regarding the national birds being taken away in the baskets early for the Roye national with the fanciers agreeing with me 100%. The main reason for this happening I have been told was they could not get a venue for race marking the birds in section E (the west section). Every other race marking venue is held in a pigeon clubs except Aberdeen (section G) who basket in Woodside Community Centre, Section A is Gretna at Springfield club rooms Section B is Dolphingstone Farm Tranent; Section C is Fife is Novar club rooms with Dundee marking at Douglas club rooms. Section D is Bo’ness club rooms, Section F is Kilmarnock club rooms. Surely they can get a pigeon club in the west of Scotland to accommodate race marking for a national race. One fancier said even if it was too small to take everyone at the same time fanciers can be allocated with a raffle ticket and the first 10 people their get their birds done first. Then the next 11 to 20 and so on, Therefore fanciers would have to keep their birds in their car until it was time for the next 10 baskets to go forward. It is not rocket science just common sense. Another fancier said ‘We have a full time secretary’ surely they have time to fix this out so this scenario of birds being kept in baskets so long does not happen again’. Continuing on this subject I’m happy to see that today Thursday 8th August many federations are holding their young bird race as the weather forecast for this weekend is terrible with heavy thunderstorm. Congratulations to these forward thinking clubs and federation officials who are putting the birds FIRST, well done lads and lasses.

2020 Stud Book & Squills

I have been and visited Charlie and Glen Cameron of Arbroath winners of 1st open SNFC Roye race and this will be sent away in the next few days. I’m visiting Jim Doig of Cardenden in Fife (5 miles away from my house) this Friday so will have Jim’s story done over the weekend. I have also made arrangements with my old pal Andy Miller of Sighthill the winner of this year’s Gold Cup race to visit him. Andy is going to collect me at South Gyle railway station next Monday (Margaret is not happy with me driving on my own over to Edinburgh due to heavy traffic) to see and handle Andy’s Reims winner and his 2nd open Roye national winner. He has had a fantastic season in 2019 especially in the nationals.

Ayrshire Federation

News from Archie McIntyre the Ayrshire federation race secretary with news of the first young bird race of the 2019 season which kicked off on the 13th of July from Carnwath. This is a race distance between 32 to 48 miles to the top end of the fed. The federation are trying something different this year, they have started the young bird programme 2 weeks earlier to try and avoid the worst of ‘Percy’ later on when they are in full swing educating their young. The race programme this year is as follows; 3 races out then back for the same 3 races then the final race will be from Catterick which is approximately 160 miles to the top end of the federation. After a bit of a delay due to the poor weather moving through at the race point, Jim O’Hare had the convoy of 1,479 birds up and away at 10-30 into light west wind. Leading the way in to the federation this week taking 1st federation on a velocity of 909.7 is Willie Lawrence of the Whitletts & District club. There has been a fair bit of discussion leading up to the first young bird race that the young birds would be dragged up to the north end of the federation and losses would be high, this certainly was not the case from this race. The first 3 birds in the fed were recorded in the Ayr area and the next 4 were recorded in West Kilbride. Reports from the clubs from South and North of the federation were that returns were excellent. Long may this continue eh Joe!!!!! 1st federation on a velocity of 909.7 is Willie Lawrence of the Whitletts & District club. Willie was telling me he has been training regular out of Fenwick and this was where the birds were seen heading down through into Ayrshire, a batch of approximately 800-900 birds. Willie’s timer now named ‘Tommy’s Star’ by his grandson Tommy is full of the best of the Gerry Clements blood. The sire is a double grandson of ‘Top Star’ and the dam is inbred to ‘Super 91’ and is a top class racer & breeder with 8 top NFC positions. 2nd and 3rd fed on 901.5 and 891.7 is David Graham of the Annbank & District club. Sadly I do not have any information or photo of David’s winning pigeons Joe.

North Section had 715 birds, 1st, 2nd and 3rd is Andy Barbour of Dalry HS 888.8, 888.3 and 888.1.

Central Section 237 birds; 1st, 2nd and 3rd is Eddie Diamond of Irvine NTHS; 856.5. 856.5 & 847.7.

South Section 527 birds; 1st Willie Lawrence of Whitletts & District on 909.7.

2nd and 3rd is D Graham of Annbank & District on 901.5 & 891.7.

Other Club winners not mentioned above are as follows; J & S O’Hare (Ardeer HS) 852.4, Benson & Cairney (Kilwinning HS) 839.8. G Mitchell (Dalmellington PC) 812.8. J & A Bunce (Kilmarnock Invitation) 737.8. I Noble (Crosshouse HS) 700.9; and J Auld (Cumnock & District) 421.5.

Traprain

News from John Baillie who writes, ‘Hi Joe, well the start of the crazy season begins; just by listening to some stories, some guys who have had horrendous training and racing with youngsters throughout the length of the UK. Still say we should now be racing youngsters early June before the Birds of Prey youngsters leave the nest and begin to be taught how to kill by their parents in July/August time, just as we starting to race our youngsters, just airing my views Joe. Now on with our first race from Ridsdale; the club sent just under 500 birds, with a few members not sending. Taking pole position is Dodie Hunter of Elphinstone his winner' sire is bred from a Tom Gilbertson crossed Macaloney pigeon, and its dam was bred by Dodie's brother Ian from his Vandenabeele family. This hen has lost a few positions in the club due to being a poor trapper. In 2nd and 3rd places we have Jimmy Mark his first timer was bred by Brian Lavery of Prestonpans from the hen that won 63rd open Roye this season for Brian when paired to cock bred by Jimmy which is inbred to ‘Little Gem’ a NFC Tarbes winner for P & B Winters crossed with a grandson of a bird to score 10th International St Vincent as yearling, 21st International Barcelona as a 2 year old and scoring the following year again from International races. The 3rd club was bred from Jimmy's No 1 stock Rauw Sablon crossed Herbot paired with a new hen. When printing off the clocks, many youngsters were reported missing with a lot coming in later on in the afternoon. I’m hearing of youngsters being reported in the Newcastle area which is 25 to 30 miles SOUTH of the liberation site. Many thanks once again Joe yours in sport John B’.

Obituary

Willie Kinnear of Danderhall, Edinburgh, I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Willie who flew in partnership with his son Barry as W Kinnear & Son in Pentland Hills Federation. They have been excellent Federation flies for many years competing from the first race i.e. Christmas race right to the last race in the programme. The name of Willie & Barry Kinnear are known throughout the UK with the highlight being their winning the Scottish National Flying Club coveted Gold Cup race from La Ferte Bernard in 2004. This wonderful pigeon named as ‘Auld Reekie’ after Edinburgh the capital of Scotland. Also won the Dewar Trophy for Scotland’s ‘Bird of the Year’ in 2004 and 2005. I was privileged to visit their family home for a loft report on this Gold Cup win and I took a photograph of the SNFC Gold Cup with their loft in the background. I used this as the front page for the SNFC web site while being the club press officer of the club. The Kinnear partnership went on to win the SNFC Ypres national in 2009 with ‘Young Reekie’ and have achieved many other top positions over the years. They won their first SNFC Gold Awards (for a bird to win 5 times from France) in 1996 with ‘Back to Basics’ He also won the following awards being winner of 1st place coefficient Euro Bird of the year, he was also the winner of SHU Dewar Trophy for Scotland bird of the Year and he won over £10,000 during his racing career. The partners won their 2nd Gold Award in 2016 with ‘Poppy’ who also won the Dewar Trophy for Scotland’s Bird of the year in 2000. Their success continued as they won SNFC Silver Awards (birds to win 3 times from France) in the following years 2009, 2013, 2014 and 2015. Unfortunately Willie has not kept the best of health over the past few years and spent the last few years in nursing care, and his wife Pat (unfortunately she has not kept the best of health either). To Pat, sons Barry, Brian, Ross & Russell and their wives, partners and to each and every one of their grandchildren, we send out heartfelt condolences at their sad loss. Willie may no longer be with us but his name will live for ever in the annuals of the Scottish pigeon sport. Rest in peace my old friend.

Joe’s Joke

A rabbit walks into a pub and says to the barman, 'Can I have a pint of beer, and a Ham and Cheese Toastie?' The barman is amazed, but gives the rabbit a pint of beer and a ham and cheese toastie. The rabbit drinks the beer and eats the toastie. He then leaves. The following night the rabbit returns and again asks for a pint of beer, and a Ham and Cheese Toastie. The barman, now intrigued by the rabbit and the extra drinkers in the pub, (because word gets round), gives the rabbit the pint and the Toastie. The rabbit consumes them and leaves. The next night, the pub is packed. In walks the rabbit and says, 'A pint of beer and a Ham and Cheese Toastie, please barman.' The crowd is hushed as the barman gives the rabbit his pint and toastie, and then burst into applause as the rabbit wolfs them down.

The next night there is standing room only in the pub. Coaches have been laid on for the crowds of patrons attending. The barman is making more money in one week than he did all last year. In walks the rabbit and says, 'A pint of beer and a Ham and Cheese Toastie, please barman.' The barman says, 'I'm sorry rabbit, old mate, old mucker, but we are right out of them Ham and Cheese Toasties.' The rabbit looks aghast. The crowd has quietened to almost a whisper, when the barman clears his throat nervously and says, 'We do have a very nice Cheese and Onion Toastie. The rabbit looks him in the eye and says, 'Are you sure I will like it.' The crowd's bated breath is ear shatteringly silent. The barman, with a roguish smile says, 'Do you think that I would let down one of my best friends. I know you'll love it.' 'Ok,' says the rabbit, 'I'll have a pint of beer and a Cheese and Onion Toastie.' The pub erupts with glee as the rabbit quaffs the beer and guzzles the toastie. He then waves to the crowd and leaves.... NEVER TO RETURN!!!!!!

One year later, in the now impoverished public house, the barman, (who has only served 4 drinks tonight, 3 of which were his), calls time. When he is cleaning down the now empty bar, he sees a small white form, floating above the bar. The barman sa

ys, 'Who are you? To which he is answered, 'I am the ghost of the rabbit that used to frequent your public house.' The barman says, 'I remember you. You made me famous. You would come in every night and have a pint of beer and a Ham and Cheese Toastie. Masses came to see you and this place was famous.' The rabbit says, 'Yes I know.' The barman said, 'I remember, on your last night we didn't have any Ham and Cheese Toasties. You had a Cheese and Onion one instead.' The rabbit said, 'Yes, you promised me that I would love it.' The barman said, 'You never came back, what happened?' 'I DIED', said the rabbit. 'NO!' said the barman. 'What from?' After a short pause, the rabbit said ... 'Mixin-me-toasties’.
