one thing no ones commented on........YOUNGBIRD SICKNESS KILLS OLDBIRDS TOO!...though poss a bit late now as this usually peaks in june/july.
bobtail..can u tell me if birds droppings are dark and runny, with dark string like droppings? u mentioned drinking excessive, salmonela and paramyxo are very similar and BOTH have symptoms which are ecessive drinking. there are several others but uve stated that birds are dying?...so that cuts out several possiblities.
most important advice uve had and u should TAKE it!....get them tested by a vet A.S.A.P. dont wait ...tomorrow morning ......let us know how u get on.
streppticocci bovis i bet its rife drink a lot of water droppings go from mush to water and a lot of it then slime green birds weight falls off in no time they start to hunch then drop dead
my first thought too usually with para other ailments there are some symptoms
so streppticocci bovis is a good bet as it seems it really coming to the fore the last few months
any news on the birds m8 terry might be right i had it about 2 years ago lost 40 + birds every time i opened the loft there would be another pigeon dead on the floor with like a big wet patch around it sent swabs to vet found out streptacocci i had ybs in nest checked them out ready for weaning next day looked perfect went in next day dead in box the said caused by either rats mice running through lofts dropping s**t every where then pigeon eats the S**t gos to the drinker and passes it to the rest of flock he cured it withen 24 hours cost me £60.00 for medicene vet said more like rats than mice probaly hope everything works out m8 yours in sport shalis lofts
call Ian Cameron from Manor court vets in chesire a pigeon fancier and a top vet number is 01829740639 as others have said it sounds like circovirus and i have heard there is hell of a lot of it about at the moment. they will need some sort of Antibiotic Ian will test which is the best one for this outbreak as it seems to differ from strain to strain.
but get on to thgis asap as it will kill a lot of them from what i have been told.
if it is streppicocci bovis treatment is either amoxcillian or ampicillian nothing else will touch it u be surprised that how many lofts have it at the moment when i say its rife i really do mean that best get a dead bird to vets for post mortem to no for sure and ask wat treatment while birds being tested to be on safe side baytrill and sulfurs will do nothing just make it worse
most microbacteria are spectrum specific thats why its better to go and seek advice from a vet as if treating blindly with wrong antibiotic your can make things worse as the bacteria will accelerate as its not been actively fought

When birds are dying daily from an unknown cause then its got way beyond the stage of asking members what might be the root cause.
You need to get to a vet ASAP and I'm pleased you are doing that today. In the meantime try and seperate sickly-looking birds from the rest - and I think culling them is the best option here (bar one perhaps, for euthanising for autopsy).
You need to clean and disinfect everything. A drinking water steriliser would also be a must.

I totally agree that the best thing about the site is the help from other fanciers when you have problems with your birds, but when it is as serious as dying within 24 hours, although it could be circovirus, , paratyphoid, streptococci bovis, salmonella, paramyxo or poison etc but although the first thing would be to isolate the birds, also keep the rest quarantined and as as you say, as soon as possible take a live ill or suspect bird to be euthanized for post mortem The vets, even good avian ones will probably prescribe the likes of Baytril with is a broad spectrum antibiotic to kick start the process and then from the lab cultures which can take days to receive the results sometimes, they will then prescribe the best coarse of action to take Sadly 3 years ago we learned the hard
