i am coming to the end of building my brand new loft.i am thinking of putting hardboard on the floor to scrape up off,i will put it shiny side up.is this a suitable type of floor covering for my birds and my loft. |

no,,,,if it does get wet or damp,,,it will go soggy and soft,,scraper will finish it off in the end !!!
use plywood,,,much better !!! |

NAW!!!, use external ply as hardboard is porous and will retain any dampness and start to break up when you scrape it |

thanks for the info the hardboard was suggested by a friend who swears by it,but i had my doubts about it.how about marine ply got the chance of a few sheets on the cheap.would this suffice. |

Nothing wrong at all with hardboard as a covering for the floor, have it rough side up though. We are replacing ours this year - its been down for 10 years and is only being replaced as we are giving the loft a sprucing up - when you have laid it, coat it with a coating of wood glue mixed with water - that will do the trick. Trust me. |

VIROCK sheet , comes in 8x4 , 1/4--3/8--1/2 inch thick , looks like asbestos , and smoothe , when dropings hit it , dry in no time if ventilation is correct , scrapeing out is a doddle , 2nd choice is maple ply as it is very hard unlike the merainti lamanate rubbish that is soft and will start to bubble after a time , scotch fir / flooring grade ply a bit on the rough side is best coated with resin , or heavy duty smoothe vinyl , a friend has this down , a brush and mop job |

would disagree as threre is no soakage in it dropings dont dry on it |

Marine ply is excellent stuff, last longer if you seal it with a good varnish |

i tried it and found there was no soakage in it found dropings didint dry in just laid on the top |

It seemed to work fine on ours ok, although we are now trying different deep litters  |

well i was talking about it with no deep litter but on that subject i use the stuff for horses find it very good and found best results when kept betwwen 4 to 6 inches i just give it a sweep with a brush on top 3 to 4 times a week and find thers no dust in loft |

We tried the granules from versa laga but Chickadee did not like them(they were to sore on her back ) so we are going to try Easybed and Stalosan |
