As Ted says, maize will put fat on but protein in maples will add weight through muscle if birds excercised well.

Mark why change your system now mate? I feed a standard y/b mixture till the training of the y/b's starts and then they are put on a racing mix and it dont get changed till the last race |

Wondered if you get a lot of maples left over? Mine don't seem to like them much, and according to Gordon Chalmers article published on here, too many cause problems for the birds:- http://forum.pigeonbasics.com/m-1195378849/s-0/highlight-maple/#num0On your question tho, maize is high in starch and sugar, unless they are burning it off in regular exercise, would expect them to gain weight on it. |

more peas ,beans , tares for putting weight on, any high protein mixture !!! maize adds flesh or body to a bird but i wouldn't say adds weight to a bird ( just my opinion ) |

1oz a day i always thought you wanted ybs for the future. so is 1oz a day food wise enough when racing on a sat with a stiff SE WIND in there face and you wonder why you have loads of loses. |

i allways beleived protein is used to build and repair any left over the body will dispose of. Carbs are used for energy any left over the body stores for when it does need it and they way it stores it is to turn it into fat. It's a lot more complex than that but thats the basic Jist of it. And seem's as Maples are high in protein and Maze is high in carbs it would make sense that the Maize will put more weight on if the energy is not getting burnt off.I would say with only an Ounze a day the birds are not being trained for more than an hour a day round the loft(sitting on the garden or house dont count ) or light road work say 20 miles or less. Will be interesting to see how much training they have been getting. |
