I have a very friendly racing pigeon in my garden in Rochford Essex. He/she arrived last night, very hungry and weak. Ate lots of seeds, disappeared and has arrived back today. A ring on either foot...one green one R19287 GB08 the other yellow with 5998. I have no idea what to do with it if I catch it, I'm reluctant to handle it as I don't want to distress it. It is very happy eating and drinking so a quick response as to what to do would be great.

This bird is back in my garden again this morning, third day running...perhaps I'm posting this in the wrong forum? Don't seem to have had much response.

Hi Louise.  You've certainly posted it in the right place, and I'd be surprised if you don't get some information on the owner/owner's racing club soon.  Perhaps everyone's off sunning themselves

For the moment, you're doing just the right thing in giving the fella some food and water.  It might just need some rest and food, and isn't ready to make the journey home yet.  Hence it coming back to you, as you're helping with refreshments.  If not injured, it probably needs to build itself up before moving off.  If the water is in a fairly deep bowl/container, that's perfect.  If it lands on the floor and doesn't look too nimble, I'm worried about cats and other predators so a shelter away from them would be great.

Hoping someone can post some club details for you.  In the meantime, a big thank you for taking the time to register on the forum and reporting the little 'fella'.  Best wishes.

Thanks for your response...I have a bird bath and she (i like to think of her as a girl) is happy paddling round in that. She has also been drinking from a bowl I left out and loves munching from my hand on bird seed. She has flown off to the nearest tree and seems to just come when she is hungry. Maybe she will find her own way eventually.
Thanks again. I love birds so discourage cats from my property.

Excellent!  Well done.  Sounds like a tame bird (and/or hungry), but even a hungry bird won't always eat out of a hand.  Are its eyes quite bright and open?  You're doing very well looking out for it.  Hopefully someone will be along soon to identify for you.

Can anyone help identify?
