Latest update on this pigeon: He/She is still with us, I have contacted the owner who lives in or near Scunthorpe but no reply as yet.
The pigeon, who we are now quite fond of,  still seems to be happy and healthy, living in the rafters of our stables and coming down to be with us while we mess about with the horses. Needless to say he is being fed on oats (  should be a fast pigeon ) which he seems to relish; but some advice on alternative food would be welcome. Also is there any outwardly visible signs to denote gender, we think it is male for some reason but not sure.

Julie, it sounds like he's having a lovely stay with you! Sounds like he's got a great loft I get my food already for pigeons. If you're likely to be having him for a while, I'd be happy to post you some won't cost you anything (pm me your address and I'll sort it). He might like a few redskin peanuts, but only ones humans can eat as the ones for wild birds can be harmful. I'm sure others will give more food suggestions. Let me know if you'd like a weeks supply of food

Yes he's having a great time, he's moved in with a fat dapple grey cob, they seem to enjoy one anothers company, and the cob likes the oats he leaves.
I would be very grateful for some more suitable food then I will have a better idea about their food. Although I have noticed the discussions about shiny neck feathers, on the forum, and he positively gleams so he must be getting what he needs to some extent.

No, sadly there has been no reply to the message I left on their voice mail. I have to say like Sally in "Pigeon in my garden" thread, I have become very attached to this bird, he is so friendly and I would be happy for him to stay; But equally I would like him to be back with his owner who is I understand a young Lad.
I haven't seen the pigeon this morning, and he was flying around a lot yesterday evening; so possibly he has already set off home to Scunthorpe. If I see him again this afternoon I will let you all know.

A young lad or not Julie, he should still do you the decency of making contact and as a non fancier he should have contacted you within 24hrs!
Not everybody who finds a pigeon has anywhere to keep it as you have.

Oh yes I agree, I am sorry that he hasn't got in touch; I shall try again if pigeon is there later, and if he isn't I will call any way to see if he has gone home. It would be good to know he has arrived safely.

Absolutely Chris, I can see from this website that you pigeon fanciers are just as dotty about your birds as we horse fanciers are about our neds! I'm sure there is a good reason why my pigeon's owner hasn't rung. I am about to go and check if pigeon has returned and will phone the guy afterwards. I have no idea how fast the birds can fly? Is it conceivable that it could have made it to Scunthorpe in a day from near Towcester?

hi julie  well done for taking care of a lost young racing pigeon  i hope the owner does get back to you especially after the trouble youve gone to in tracing him  as chris and pjc point out most of us do want to know where our lost pigeons are and the owner should have contacted you by now especially as you are a non fancier   one lost racing pigeon was lucky enough to find david,s (invalidusername) garden when david was a non fancier and david kept and looked after that pigeon (blue boy) and bought him back to full health    if non fanciers report our pigeons then the least we can do is contact the finder  if the pigeon does return to you julie and you want to keep it then you can always ask the owner or if you prefer i will ask him for you   anyway good luck and keep us all posted on the outcome   debbie

Hi Julie

I have just joined this forum as I have a pigeon hiding under my barbecue in the garden.  I live in Leeds and it has only appeared in the last hour.  When I picked it up I saw it had a ring which had 2008 on it and a green cloth type ring on the other foot.
I can't bring it in as my two bernese mountain dogs would frighten it.
If I leave it out the fox might get it.
Any advice?

Thank you DJ. Yes I have had a good read about David's pigeon in the kitchen, what a wonderful story, I have been chatting to him and he was kind enough to send some food for my chap, but as he flew off this morning he hasn't had any of it.

I have checked the yard this evening and he still hasn't returned , so I assume he has gone north to his home. I rang the owner again and left a message, you never know they may get back to me, they may be on holiday with someone else looking after their loft but not the phone messages.

We were in the yard for several hours this evening doing the neds, and every time a pigeon flew over we were craning our necks to see if it was our bird; we even got the binoculars out to spy on the wood pigeons in the trees, there are lots here. How pathetic is that, we must be hooked!

Cheers every body, you are a great crowd and so funny, interesting and caring about your passion ; I will keep you posted if my bird returns or any others drop in, they would be very welcome, or if I hear from the owner. I shall also drop in from time to time to see what your all talking about!

Julie (guyfinross) if you can catch the bird and put it in a box with some food and water away from the dogs etc it can have a rest. If it is on the ground either a cat or fox could get it.The most important thing is to give the bird some water and if you have any bird seed then a little will sufice, if not some rice would do.

Hi Julie, just saw your message. I am probably not the person to ask really as I know nothing. I was lucky, the pigeon who landed on us slept in the rafters of our small stable block; and yes I was worried about foxes, kestrels crows not to mention our dogs getting it. I think from what I can see pigeons are very quick at taking off to evade predators, but equally I know foxes hunt at night so can understand your concerns.

He is probably tired, hungry thirsty and frightened. but I found that ours began to trust us and would come down whenever we were nearby and we could almost stroke him; a few more days and we would have been able to catch him. I just gave ours some cereal- oats because that was what we had- and water in a dog bowl. But they like rice, defrosted peas & sweetcorn which you may have.

You need to see if you can read the number on the ring and post on this website under a new thread, then hopefully someone will give you an idea where it is from.

I'm pretty sure you will get lots of helpful and very friendly advice from these guys.

Hey Julie, less than a dozen posts and you're hooked   As I said to you off the forum, think about getting yourself some pigeons.  You don't have to race them - maybe some nice white ones would look well in your stable yard.  You might end up racing them , but you clearly have an affinity with these birds, and I'd love you to experience a longer term relationship with them.  It's so worth it, and they'll pay you back - just like your neds do   

Hi all

I caught the pigeon who is quite tame really.  He is now in our garage and has water and all I had to give him was rabbit food as there are seeds in it.  I will give him some rice in the morning.
Hopefully he will feel like flying away so I will let him in the garden first thing to see how that goes.
What I read on his ring was HET 1912, hope someone can help me with that so I can call the owner.

Julie (1 ) stay on the forum and ask about white (or, indeed any type of) pigeon.  Lots of people who could point you in the right direction.  You could even join a local pigeon club!

Hi Julie (1) Hahaha! We too have horses and I've just recently got back to pigeons after along spell with out. They will certainly add a touch of colour to your yard. They will amuse you with their antics ( better than any T.V. soap ) as they are really just like us, apart from we don't have the advantage of flight. Get some colourful tumblers as they not only look good but they will entertain you in the heavens. I promise you for a little effort the rewards are well woth it. Have fun.

But that is an entirely different subject.

What sort of accommodation do any of these non-racing type pigeons need? Do dovecotes do the job or do they need more substantial buildings, like a shed.

We used to have few fancy pigeons on the farm where i lived long time before i had anything to do with racing pigeons  Ours did have a tendency though to decide to make their nest and lay eggs in the corner of my stable a few times werent bothered at all about being in with my horse  

Hi Rose, I suppose I can't make them roost where I want if I don't shut them in at night, corner of the stable a  bit dodgy with one or two of our horses though, so they would have to be choosy and pick a placid one's stable.  

they say pidgens round horsees helps them as birds fly in and out of stable the horse is less likly to startle  doc jones swansea race horse trainer had loads round his yard as does john turner west wales show jumpers and david broome

Horses dont seem bothered about them at all it was just a pain when you went to clean your stable out even had one that decided the old bucket hanging up in the tack room was place to be  We did have a shed for them  though and most went in it had to shut them up at night if we could because of the foxes
