I am looking into a new loft. and  have about 20 x 12 ft to play with. Any advice on the number of sections etc. and how to make best use of the 12' depth.

Should add it needs to look good to keep the boss happy, thats the main reason the old one has to go!! Also someone in Scotland to build and errect would be handy but I could collect it and put it up myself.

I would go for a 20 x 8 with 4 sections and a corridor along the front.
2 sections with nest boxes and 2 with perches then the space infront of the loft leaves room to pave it or put a tidy platform to keep the boss happy.
You also need to think about how you plan to race, open door or traps for ETS etc.

Thanks Phil. The 12' is actually the space I have available for the loft, I will still have a paved area along the front. I would like to trap through something into the corridor as when I am training I am not always able to get back for the birds arriving. does that make sense?

ok, go for 12 x 8 with 3 sections then, 1 with nest boxes and 2 with perches. loft in the pic would be ideal.

Heres a picture of the loft at present. The new loft front can be in the same as existing but I canm go further back to give me more depth.

Better of sweet talking the boss and having a longer loft rather than a deeper loft.

i would have a 20 x 6 with a 20 x 6 avairy along the front so they would trap in the same place all their life . 3 section 2 x 6ft with 1 8ft .

My thoughts are 20' long and a max of 12' deep. the 20' will take me to the end of the slabbed area to the right. I suppose I could have a 4' corridor and the sections 8' deep and make them slightly narrower. As long as the ventilation works okay at 12' ????????

8' deep sections are going to be very dark in the back unless you have roof lights!

YOU COULD EVEN GO FOR 2 20ft LONG BY 5 OR 6ft BROAD LOFTS SITTING AGAINST NEAR ENOUGH AGAINST EACH OTHER WITH THE BACK 1 2 FT HIGHER THAN THE FRONT LOFT AND USING THE ROOF OF THE FRONT LOFT AS A LANDING BOARD..MY COUSIN USED TO HAVE HIS LOFTS LIKE THIS AND IT WORKED A TREAT FOR HIM

I have a 16.5 x 10 foot and have the one opening with a little 2 .5  ft passage. There is the length at the back x 4 .5 totally for the y/b's Each side is the 6 x5  and 6 x4( this has 12 and 16 nest boxes respectatively. I go into the Hospital / feed section via side door. All birds - all their lives - use the same trap.

Their's a guy who makes huts @garages also does pigeon lofts in a place called barrmill in ayrshire the guy's name is mullen. You tell him how you want it he'll make it deliver it and errect it for you .I'll get you the phone number if you like.

Ally whats wrong with the loft you have got just now looks the part to me and neat and tidy its what you put in it that counts

Mines isn't far of that size, I would go for a 20 x 6 and a 20 x 6 aviary in front of it, all split into four sections, I made the mistake of making it one large aviary, I am now changing that and splitting it into three sections, the aviary has a poly carbon roof to let the max light into the loft.

That looks the part and must be great for the birds. A few wee mods and it would suit me down to the ground.  Did you build it your self?

I think how you design your loft depends on what system you intend racing on. If w/hood I think housing all your pigeons in the one loft would be a mistake.

Hi Tony I can only speak from my experience, I flew widowhood this year with the long races in mind and my hens were in the next section to my cocks and it didn't seem to affect them. However I appreciate for sprint racing it may make a diference?

i think no matter what,who,where,when,how or whatever !!!


most important ingredient not to forget is VENTILATION !!!!!
