Hi, going back to time I was building my own boxes, before I started I decided first what type of nest fronts I wanted; I chose a plastic type, and got my box measurements from that. The section dimensions then determine whether the boxes are two or three rows wide , and height.

Would also recommend your bottom box to be a foot off the floor, and your top box floor no higher than eye level.

18" just fine mate, make them easy to remove as the front is not needed once birds settle.

Big advantage of plastic is it  easier to keep clean, than the wood and dowling ones.

However like making things to fit loft best for apperance and most practical.

Cheers
