Okay,
So we've parted the youngsters and let them have a walk around outside for some weeks.  Do we still leave them to take off into the skies on their own or do we encourage them to fly with the odd hand clap etc.

how old are the young birds and how long have they been going out?
Do they have a flutter up onto the loft or just walk around?
What and how are you feeding them?

Phil

Hi Phil,
The question was just a general one to see how others get their youngsters off the ground.  Most of mine are flying nicely now but I never frighten them up.  As a rule, there is half a dozen old hens with them to teach em' the ropes.  The stragglers may be tempted to fly.  Directly after parting, my young birds are fed on VIP, always an evening feed.

Dont clap your hands whatever you doo, you will just frighten them and could result in some lossess.

Leave them to find there wings, once some of them go up, the rest will follow, you have to have patients with them T-T

But again they are your birds mate.

Dougie.

I never force my youngsters to take thier first flight, as previously said, "be patient",they will fly when they are ready to do so. The time spent wandering around the garden is valuable, getting to know thier suroundings, do not cut this short.

Don't frighten them, what I sometimes do is take a couple to the bottom of the garden and let them fly back up the garden to the loft. the others see them flying and strike up as well. But don't rush them.
