frank1 i fly widohood cocks and widowhood hens i feed as follows. quarter of an ounce per bird for the morning feed and 1 full ounce per bird on the evening feed. thats enough, hope this helps.. nigel.

Frank i feed much the same as Nigel only differance is i give 1/2 oz in the morning and then 3/4's oz later

Beginning part of the week I believe you can overfeed on the so called rich grains, a good % of barley early in the week see’s they don’t over indulge.

IF YOU FEED TO MUCH AT THE START OF THE WEEK THEY WONT EAT AS MUCH AT THE END OF THE WEEK WERE IT MATTERS THE WHOLE BUILD UP TO THE RACE HAS TO BE BALANCED
AS ALL THE BEST FANCIERS SAY NOT TO LITTLE NOT TO MUCH SO THERE MUST BE UNDER FEEDING AND OVER FEEDING

All birds eat different amounts.Give as much as they can eat and then take feeding away from them after an hour. This insures your birds will have the reserves they need in later races.

most pigeons will not eat a balanced diet being hopper fed as some prefer one grain more than another, unless you hopper feed beans then feed a mix by hand

You are approaching perfect feeding, when on first sight, they look right,  ie:- wattles white, full of fight, tails tight, eyes bright,  feet white(no sh**), dropped first flight, fly at height, and they FEEL LIGHT. Mine are like this tonight! too early, Maybe. Goodnight!

i dont beleive in starving pigeons at any time, but a balanced diet is somewhat different i,e you cant overfeed w/hood cocks , but you can balance their diet,  feeding lightly [depurative with yeast] at the begginning of the week[am and pm] then they will relish carboheydrates and proteins  towards the race day [again this is balanced i,e distance etc ]

at the start of the week yes as u should have them real hungry and by Friday if ure racing Saturday it should be impossible to get them to eat so i think the answer is yes and no  

why feed barley early in the week ?, i would think a racing bird would need some protein to repair muscle unless protein powders are added to the barley

I thnk you can overfeed any pigeon, it's down to individual metabolism bit like us really, there's a small minority that would never put weight on and another minority that only have to look at food and put weight on! Last year my birds didn't go out of the loft September to April my two cocks that were 1 & 2 at 473 miles were fat!!
The pigeon that was 1st did not rear any young until after racing, not intentional but his hen (yearling) was barren!! The 2nd reared one YB. They only had two tosses before first race (123 mile) but were locked out for 2 hours each day. No cut down on food or anything. They were not in racing condition until after 300 mile, one of the reasons why they went to 473 miles rather than Tarbes. The same thing will happen this year (though not paired to a barren hen and these two all being well will be going to Barcelona)!! I have been feeding since the 2nd week in December barley, homoform and linseed and will do until the week before pairing.

Yes! there are no set diets for any distance pigeon. I remember sending six to 500 miles, and in a north wind' timed 3 of them within 7 and a half minutes flying with a  1000 plus velocity (over 13 hrs on the wing) They landed as if arriving from a short toss, showing no signs of tiredness whatsoever. The second timer had only had one short inland race, a red hen from the Parishes  (London) at the time.  Before the race, I took them to llanymynech Wales 7 days beforehand on a fishing trip about 70 miles. The year later I won the same race with a good cock, who still had the shavings on his feet, and topped the Amal.  But in all honesty I've never ever seen anything like the three which arrived so fresh. So it's just a case of getting them right I guess. Vic.
