I'm struggling to find a new homing-box for my dovecote (there's one on ebay but £40 is a bit steep!). Any suggestions? Thanks a lot.

If you can get some garden netting, that would be a cheaper option. Drape it over the top and fasten the bottom with planks of wood, tent pegs, stones, whatever.  This isn't a good option if you have concerns about cats or foxes.





Hmm, looking at these now, I remember we secured the bottom by wrapping the excess netting around garden canes and then used tent pegs to hold it down.

Thanks for your suggestions (especially the very useful comment from Clockman). Peckedhen that's really kind of you to post the pictures - I've got problems with cats etc so I'd rather not use a net this time (I did the last time I needed to home some new doves but I've now moved house).

hi m8 i know this sounds mad but  what about stopping at any house you see with 1 in garden ? as  i ve seen many cote s and they never have fantails in them  maybe would sell , i ve seen only 1 with birds in it in all time  , any trouble with hawks  about ?  & garden centre cotes here are £ 400 far too much ! what about 1 fix too house wall  , jon

Never mind the garden centre crap, get one made for you







All mine house pigeons although some customers just want them as a feature, just made one for a large estate that houses 36 pairs, made in mahogany with a slate roof, I will post pics once the homing net is down

definately look the part, a work of art right enough,  also a good idea of pecked hens for quickness

the cotes do look great Doves but not every 1 can make stuff  as good as yours ,  No way pay garden prices , just pointing out you can see them then do as you say try your own    

They really do look good think anyone would be pleased to see one of those in their gardens

These are excellent DOVEScot.  Very nice.  Looking forward to seeing a pic of the mahogany and slate one if you can manage it.

This is one made from Mahogany and Cedar with a slate roof for 12 pair of birds, I made the same one except it was for eight pairs and sold for £350
All the internal are tanalised wood and 6mm external ply, you wont get that in the garden centres, sell them to order or just stick them on the front lawn. The only part I don't do is the slate roof, an old guy does them for me in half the time

Doves, do u get the hawks  coming around your cotes at all?  i ve have them coming in garden after small birds  so put us  off having fantail s out all day  , jon

That is absolutely beautiful - a real work of art.  Am really envious of your craftsmanship - I can hardly stick up a shelf

We have quite a few buzzards in the area around us so they command the area regards the hawks, we do get them mostly young ones. I do not keep ones with big fantails in the cotes as they are easier to catch by the hawks and cats, prefer to keep ones with straight tails as they are as good as racers at taking off, although nothing is foolproof.
Do not feed on the ground as this is where the hawks pick them off, we have a feeding station like a huge bird table where they all get fed and we are always around at feeding time

Normally a homing box covers one hole, they are really easy to make, but there are various ways you can do it, this is how I done it with harris fencing and a net on the front cote



And this is Chickadee at what she does best(with pigeons that is) after we took the net down

They are excellent.  I did  lot of research before I bought mine and have to say there's a lot of c*** on the market. These really do look 'the business'. How I wish that I'd know Dovescot before I forked out twice the price for mine!!

just got back from Hexham  seen  a dove cote full of fantails  + a small barn full  around 30 whites   in all

What's the wire round the pole for?  Doesn't it help the cats and squirrels to climb up??

No it's to help the ivy climb up  

The cotes have a skirt so anything climbing up the pole cannot get to the cote and there are no edges for them cling on to
