will it be a day for the hens or will it be the good old bird ?

Think i would be giving it a miss if i was racing yearlings especially if they were inexperienced plenty more races to go yet  When the wind is in the east, 'tis neither good for man nor beast

I'll give it a miss anyway. I would not risk losing good birds in this cold weather.
An east wind on Saturday would be a tail wind for our birds but there are always those which need to battle back.
Racing on 19th April is too early for this location. South West Scotland

We are at Coldstream on 19th April, forecast is 20mph NE wind.

Its been freezing cold here today, it was fine when I set off in the morning for the NE but when I got there it was blowing a cold NE wind. 3 out of 9 missing tonight.

Take the point about yearlings, but if that is all you have, is the advice to sit out the race?

This is my 1st old bird season and ive only got yearlings to race this year theyve all raced a full youngbird program our first race is 80miles on Saturday. Would it be better for me to leave the cocks at home and just send the hens in light of the forecasted weather?

its no good to fly pigeons in east winds at all,if your racing yearlings thats even worse for them as i was allways told, yearlings are harder to fly an keep them than young birds !!!  that was from a good fancier with a reputation for racing and he would never race or train in any east winds at all !!!

rose advice is the best one to follow with !!!

If you have only got a team of yearlings I would be very careful what you send and whether it is worth taking the chance of sending them whether it be hens or cocks one bad race and you can be looking at a lot of empty perches and you can be finished before racing has even started its bit different for those with well established lofts and plenty of birds   Ive always rated a hen on a hard day but im talking about older experienced birds   I remember what it was like when you first start racing and wanting to send but i think a bit of patience and being a bit cautious might pay off in the end

I am not too worried myself, as all mine have been to just on 100 mile.  I will  still be sending. my young w/h team  this week, because they  forecast, a southerley wind creeping in with the easterley wind. There are times in this game, when you have to play it by past experiences. Good luck to all. alas still no smilies. LOL

They say 'Only send the best'! Well trhat will quickly sort out a few... may seem that you only had culls that weren't any good.
Why I never bother with the first few races.
Can mean sending good birds once to many if in with a shaout of the averages .... so I am automatically out of them, etc. the real races at the distance.
I don't ruin good yearlings / 2yo's in East Winds if they come back.
Can breed better youngsters later in warmer weather. Can fly Natural and hold flights.
The actually prestigeous races and races of merit are flown later in the year, so are fresher.
And a lot more... With the warmer and better weather in September, even early October, racing could well start in first week in May and more than satisfy the majority of fanciers.
Let them that want early finish races I.e Sprints have their moments.... Just wish that they would stop being selfish and interfering with the Longer races, especially with the likes of Noon Libs, where they pinch unmerited glory via trying to say their Middle distance birds are Winning the distance races.

Never mind what way the birds are flying, East winds are cold winds from Siberia, and cold is cold. Last week was cold enough.
