As you maybe aware, I am looking forward to my first years racing next year after years of keeping pigeons.

I currently am getting my birds conditioned for breeding..and can't wait to get started.

I am looking for some tips and general advice on feeding Yb's from 'nest to racing'.......a week by week feeding programme would be perfect if anyone has such a thing.

any handy tips.....and formulars would be great to

What have you been doing with pigeons up till now?

As I mainly keep the white for my dove release company, they mainly get an ounce and half of ecomony mixure (per bird per day) with tonic once a week...and a dash of garlic oil .........to keep them in good nick...they have several types of grit, and minerals available at all times

I hopper feed once a day, and give them fresh clean water...and give some multi vits etc when moulting.

The loft 'was' quite natural with the stock doing their own thing..and youngsters transfered into another section when weaned.....

When eggs are hatched I galley pot feed the adults and just add a few red skinned peanuts during the day to boost the protien.......other than that;  that is it........

I am aware that I am going to have to much more methodical when rearing a young race team, as I have been getting it drilled into me that nutrition is the key.....

kevin hursts book east to west tells all best read i had in years cant go too far wrong if u follow him

get yourself a good breeding mix and leave them youngens on it until about 2 weeks b 4 u train but make sure they fly well round the house and dont get to fat.

as for suppliments i wouldnt hurt to give them a multi vit 1's or 2's a week and thats that mate clean grit also.

i would recomend u use vanrobayes breeding or start plus versele laga

Your question is a very broad one WRPM. y/birds raced on darkness are fed completely different than those left natural for instance. There are other factors like how many times a day can you feed them? how much training you intend to give them? also any illnesses they may encounter would have to be taken into consideration.
There's so many variables that come into it, by taking a feeding system on board now and sticking to it I feel would be a mistake.The best thing I can do for you is offer advice throughout out the season if you require it.

You seem to keep it simple which is best policy,
i feed versa laga energy plus all year round nothing else, plain water with multivitamin 1 or 2 every 3 weeks, also just mineral powder when i think they need it, dry days only.
a liquid calcium supplement in the water 1 a week as this is so very important.
small oil seeds when racing is complete to finish through the moult.

only feed your pigeons a tiny amount in the mornings just as a taster, then main feed is  until they go for a drink then stop.

shame really if you were local you could popped in and taken as many ideas from me as you wanted to.. or give me a call mate , i pm my number to you.

Thanks Timbarra...thats good advise......so effectively I don't to modify the feed too much...as long as its good quality food.....with small seeds like rape or the like..

I assuming that you hopper feed in the evening, and when the birds take a swig...in your eyes....they've had enough food?

hi mate, you can call anytime , i home all day so no problem.
not hopper feed as such, put handful of feed in hopper till eaten then another , do this until you feel they had enough, use hopper as a plate to eat off so no dirt on food.

leave no grain in loft .. mice will be a problem if you do !!

Some fanciers due to work commitments hopper feed which means there will always be food available. I know mice can be a problem but unfortunately you cannot always be at the loft 24/7.

Go to your food stockest and ask him to give you the versa laga book on feeding its free its all there for the whole year and for the diferent distances they have spent a small fortune developing thease mixses with some of the top animal food nuttrisionsts in the world but pigeon fanciers still think they know better

if you were a top flyer frank not saying your not. if one of the top feed merchants came up to you and offered you money  to put a fancy name on a bag of food i don't think any of us would say no. they say the sport has changed the only thing that has mostly changed there is a pill or position for anything now. my father in aw went over the local corn merchants today a bag of barley used to £5.50 he payed today £8.80 even a bag of beans are £80 and that's for 20 kilos so you are paying more for 5 kilos less.

Reminds me when I left Tesco's for to take over a small grocery store - soon went back to Tesco's lol.
At the time Tesco's invest £4 a week or something collosual and there 15 year old girl who had left school 6 month earlier knew a darn sight more that Tesco's knew according to the Area Manager and wanted the store to take note. I left, the store went bust and Tesco's are still raking it in.
