I Guess women more that guys are guilty of this, but I like to give a pigeon who has done well for us or displays special characteristicts.
One of our birds is known as Periscope as he always stuck his head out of the dowels in the carrying basket to look around, his 2 2005 kids are known as Microscope and Stethescope.
Lets hear your favourite names and the reason you gave this name to your pigeons
had one with a very nice name " ISLES " a bloke said to me why have you given your pigeon a daft name like that ? i told him the bird had a week out and came back covered in oils ?
i had a bird called mudlark, came home one day with mud on his feet, and the name stuck [so did the mud ]it is amazing how names just crop up. ive had broken leg, wee heed, whitey[a jet black] last in, moneyspinner, taeless, jocky, young co co, barny[born in a barn, and topped the fed]houdini, broken flight and many more, all names that just cropped up,some for obviuos reasons.
The Lone Ranger; had only one old bird racer flying to my loft in my first season racing. My clubmates nicknamed him, that year he went right down the road to the Maidstone National (245 miles), which is a combine race, 25,000 birds, so he had to come alone to do that He went out to Lillers the next year, and kept coming well (others accompnied him this time ); got him out as a 3yo and lost him training from 12 miles
i have got some called BAD WING:he has broke his wing and cant race again PIED:she is a pied and we called it her ontil we could find another name but never WESTY:he is a west of england tumbler (i am named after him)was my first pigeon MRS WESTY:paired up with westy so we kind of married them. MR MEALY:he is a mealy BIG TOM:irish pigeon (putman) so i named him after my moms uncle BROWNIE:his colour was brownish (ash red) lots more but this is just a few all the best martin
Just to prove the fact that I'm completely crackers I give my young bird Team names, such as The Dambusters, The Light Brigade and The Back Sheep Squdron
I thought that I'd name them by the alphabet so that I would know how old they are. I started with Albert and Agnes (buy now think that Albert may have to be Albertina;D) Then came Betty and Bertie, Carla and Carl but they went back so it all went pear shaped. I now have four white Logans which I can't tell apart so the poor things are nameless!
I just bought a bird named Chocolate Thunder I have some grizzles Dusty, Dirty, Dingy, They all looked as if theyd been in the dirt as young, my best bird Tuffy 63 he went 10 of 11 weeks hit sheet everytime and was best in club
When I was in a racing partnership we used to name them all, so we would both know which one we where talking about e.g. James Bond (ring numb. 007), blue-nose, big blue, Long Neck, Mr reliable, Grunt. I still have the odd name for some, but its not the same racing on my own. Ive just got a hen of Jimmy White, so all her offspring will be named Van-White 1, Van White 2 etc. LOL
I don't have names for the bad trappers, I don't have them very often but when I do they are Steve's birds <VBG> and the birds that don't do very well I claim they are Salford VAN hires <laugh again>
the white logan that went missing for a night, but came back yesterday, martin asked me which one went? " i said "PEUGEOT" (last 3 didgits are 406) we also have PEUGEOT: 405 407 408 409
also knew a woman who called her dog " CIGERETTE" when i asked her why? she said he had to have all 4 legs amputated...... EVERY MORNING SHE TOOK HIM OUT FOR A DRAG!.................................... lol lol lol
