I was scratching the quill on the tail feather and have scratched too hard.                                                   It's bleeding a lot. i've tried a styptic pencil and am applying pressure at the moment but it's not stopping. what else can  i do?

I note the time of your post was 4 hours ago, Peckedhen.

Have you managed to get a skin or scab to form over the break yet?

Such a tiny area to work in. The only thing I can think of is a very, very tiny spot of superglue on the breach to try and seal it.

Peckedhen,

with white pigeons like yours it is easy to see where the blood is up to in the growing quill. If the blood is nearly to the end of the sheaf there is nothing you can do to help it out, better to leave it and let nature take its course. When the blood has gone out of the quill, then you can try scrapeing the underside of the quill.
The same can be said for cutting back toe nails and beaks-look where the blood runs to.
The feather that you have made bleed will be stained by the blood and therefore no good for showing. They say we learn by our mistakes.

Yes thanks Bruno, the bleeding did eventually stop after keeping pressure on it for at least twenty minutes - gave me a scare though!

Andrew, not only one feather spoilt by the blood, all the ones aroung it too - it was quite messy but, fortunately I'm not showing him he is just a pet!    I was sooo looking forward to his new tail too, as the old one is very stained from when he had the runs.

Glad to hear the problem's sorted. I sure was in a stew there, since I was the one who advised you to do the thumbnail job - me and my blind treatment at fault again. Apologies for the scare, Peckedhen.

It may not have been run-of-the-mill pipey feathers.. I've never experienced the sheath to run so far down the feather, or the pulp (blood) so far up. As beautyhomer says, you would normally expect to see where the blood supply ends.

Did you notice if the other quills on the same bird were full of blood?

I didn't see any sign of blood in the feather - I've posted a photo under fancy pigeons as Joe90 asked for one. Have a look and see if you think they are run-of the-mill Bruno.  I did sveral sucessfully but I'm not risking doing any more!!

For future reference a quick way to stop bleeding is to put a little drop of Lavender essential oil on the affected part.
