A friend has rescued a feral pigeon which had dipped its wings in gloss paint. It can't fly and it will probably need to moult all the primaries and secondaries before it can, i.e. a long time off! Currently it resides in a small pen alone, and I was hoping for some advice on what he should do next with it. It is eating grain and drinking water, although it has reduced its intake over the last couple of days. Any advice would be gratefully received. Alex p
With due respect to Peckedhen's post, does sound as if this bird is in need of specialist care over a longish period. You don't say if the paint has dried yet.
The bird will try to clean itself by preening. It may have taken in some of the paint and if so it may not eat or drink normally for much longer. The fumes alone may be causing it breathing difficulties.
I would try the RSPCA. They'll pick it up and arrange to have it placed in a centre which will be able to clean, rehab and eventually release or rehome the bird.
Are you in USA or United Kingdon. If you are USA I have a number I can call for a group who will care for your friends bird, if you are in England I will willngly give you the e-mail address of this group and maybe they can give you some advice by e-mail
