Hello,

A friend has rescued a feral pigeon which had dipped its wings in gloss paint. It can't fly and it will probably need to moult all the primaries and secondaries before it can, i.e. a long time off! Currently it resides in a small pen alone, and I was hoping for some advice on what he should do next with it. It is eating grain and drinking water, although it has reduced its intake over the last couple of days. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Try asking on this link Alex. There are a lot of rehabbers who may have come across this before.

They will get back to you pretty quickly too.

With due respect to Peckedhen's post, does sound as if this bird is in need of  specialist care over a longish period. You don't say if the paint has dried yet.

The bird will try to clean itself by preening. It may have taken in some of the paint and if so it may not eat or drink normally for much longer. The fumes alone may be causing it breathing difficulties.

I would try the RSPCA. They'll pick it up and arrange to have it placed in a centre which will be able to clean, rehab and eventually release or rehome the bird.

Ask risk of sounding cruel, just pluck the painted feathers, and the bird will grow new ones and be flying within the month.

(Surely a bird used to freedom would prefer the brief pain of plucking to nearly a year's confinement waiting on natural moult.)

Alex,  whatever you decide to do, I think that you need to do asap. As Bruno said, the bird will be preening and possibly ingesting the paint.
