speight i have peanuts in my loft coat pocket most times when im cleaning out etc,im always teasing the birds with them letting them fight over them etc.The birds know that i have them and this motavates the birds everytime i enter the lofts. Some of the tame birds are constantly at me trying to get there treat.I dont give too many this time of year but when breeding starts i will mix them with the corn.

HELLO ALL, I FEED REDSKINS ALL YEAR ROUND BUT NOT TOO MANY. WHEN REARING I HAVE FOUND MIXED CHOPPED NUTS''THE SORT YOU CAN BUY IN SUPERMARKETS''ARE REALLY BENIFICIAL I MIX THEM WITH HORMOFORM AND GROATS AND GIVE A SMALL AMOUNT TO EACH PAIR EACH DAY,AND A COUPLE OF TIMES A WEEK ADD ECHINACEA ONTO THE MIX AND SINCE USING THIS IVE NOT HAD ANY Y/B SICKNESS IN LOFT,BUT THIS COULD JUST BE COINCIDENCE,BUT IT DOES BRING THEM ON BEAUTIFULLY.

Hi speight because i want as much fat and protein pumped into the youngbirds as possible, mixing them in with the food the older birds ravish them eating them before anything else.I also swear by homoform when breeding, gem the pax on food three time a week also.

carl, ive started giving the birds homoform a very small ammount, they took a while to get the taste (like the peanuts) but now ravish it, what benifits have you noticed, i seem to have noticed my birds are more active?

Hi Peckedhen

The reason for using peanuts that are for humans  is because the ones for wild birds are treated with chemicals,  that over a long time can have an effect on the pigeons,

This is what we have been told, and everyone in our area say the same thing.
hope it is true and not because they all have shares in the local health food shop.

 RAY

i have also heard that the ones for birds can carry mould on some of them & can be bad for the pigeons.
also when doc white told me about the nuts i chopped them at first, , but now they love em, but only 1 or 2 nuts per day each, its the nuts that got my birds so tame, even the stock birds i got off people are now waiting for me in the morning for their nut out of my hand, if they dont take it out my hand, they dont get one   But its worked for me, & when i go in the loft now at first light before the hens get off the eggs, theres one or two that will take the nut while sitting on the nest its a good feeling to get them this tame & trust you.

Peanuts bought other than human grade should be given 20 seconds in the microwave, a couple of handfuls at at time, kills of any nasties.

Yes I know they love them but, a pigeon fancier from kennoway said that they were poisonous to the birds systems, now, I've been feeding peanuts to our birds since we got them and if they were poisonous all our birds would be stone dead by now, but, they are thriving.

I just wondered if anyone else thought them not to be good for the birds, but, I'm more than happy with my replys, thanks bewted and geordie.

My birds are also more than happy with your replys.

they can be poisonous to the system if overfed i would presume,as they put a lot of fat on pigeons if fed ad lib,,,,,,,,,,but, used as a treat or for trapping or both ,,,,they are good !!!!!!

wild birds love peanuts,,so,,if the case poisonous to a pigeons system,,,,what happens to wild birds !!!!  food for thought !!!  more a matter of feeding sensibly ,,thats all !!!!
