There was a post on here about treating for canker a long time ago and it basically said there were about 8 identified strains with most being harmless and a couple being fatal about 90% of the time to birds that were previously unexposed most birds lived through the lesser strains and these that were later exposed to the more toxic forms were affected less with very few deaths
Using this info I quit treating for canker about 3 years ago and have had no visible problems with it,, I do treat my race team about 1/2 way through season but not breeders, bicarb soda alters PH and probably VERY little else ( it is used to alter the PH in swimming pools ) and guess what else I do.....
Cider Vinegar which as we all know alters the PH in the blood my guess canker probably has a real low tolerance for ph changes
I dont know just my guess

you i think have hit the nail on the head 2 years ago while in secondary school researched something simiular about bacteria and parasites not reacting well to a constant change to pH i also think tempreture was involved but dont quote me on the temp part.

I don't use medication, but I do use half a crushed fresh organic garlic bulb in the drinking water Saturdays & Sundays, 52 weeks a year.

It takes care of a number of things , trichomonads is one.

And if I run out of garlic, my second choice is refrigerated organic cider apple vinegar in the drinking water, 5ml to 2ltr.

have to agree that garlic has its uses but its not a cure all and end all if it was why are there so many pigeons still going down with this or that cocci canker respiratory there all about so how has garlic not cured all that lot or does it chase it into remmision ,another case of plastering over a cut .

I agree with what you say, Sammy, garlic is not a cure all.

I also agree with your sticking plaster bitty too, but I think that is better applied to continually medicating birds during race season.

Garlic will shift certain stuff, including the three things mentioned,  trich, cocci and chlamydia (just one respiratory org) and provided the bird isn't at death's door garlic used in higher concentrations will cure too, it just takes longer than proprietry medication.
